Ichiro's 3000th Hit - 142 to go! First Ballot HOF! Topic

Perhaps somebody should tell Brandon Phillips that 1 point of OBP is worth 2 points of SLG.
Jeez, maybe someone should tell Phillips to act like a professional. The guy didn't attack him, he just pointed out that the Reds are batting a guy with a .310 OBP second. Even you can see how dumb that is.

When asked what the most important statistic is for valuing a hitter, Ted Williams said "Slugging percentage."

I go with Ted.

I agree in principle. But SLG isnt weighted correctly. Williams would like wOBA.
He's kinda dead but he'd probably like to be alive so he could kick your *** for attempting to turn baseball into a math problem.

You know calculating slugging involves math, right?

You're right, and all 28 AL MVP voters in 1985 were wrong.  Every single one of them.

Got it.
Just 23. It would have been reasonable to vote for Brett.
Sure thing Biz
Not sure what you're so upset about.
I'm not upset, it's just a really biz like thing to think without a doubt that everyone else is wrong, even when there's lots of them that think differently than you, and some of your posts are coming off quite arrogant.....hence the:

Sure thing Biz
Based on each players' performance, do you really think the Mattingly was the best player in the AL in 85?

I just don't see it. If you want to pick a corner infielder with power, Brett is the choice. If you're looking for the combined value of offense, defense, and base running, it's Henderson. There really isn't an argument for Mattingly.
Maybe baseball is more than just neatly organized numbers on a page?

Do you think Ted Williams calculated his own slugging percentage?

Apologies to those affected, but I'm taking back my Ichiro appreciation and road to 3000 hits thread. Any post from here on, in which Ichiro is not the dominating subject will be flagged for being off topic. Discussion of his value and HOF worthiness is fine. Discussion about the MVP race from 27 years ago is not.

I hope you respect my wishes, but I highly doubt you turds will.

Thanks.

Ichiro 2-3 with a HR. Up to 2,728 hits. Passes Chipper Jones for 57th on the All-Time list.

Way to kill the thread, stine.

Ichiro will get 3000 hits, but (unfortunately) I think it will be due to him sticking around and hit .275 for a few years to do it.

And a .595 OPS.

Exactly.  I think he is a HOF player, but I hate when guys stick around just to get to those milestones.  Mike Schmidt did it right.  He was past his prime, he knew it, so he decided to retire rather than hitting .220 with 25 homers and 200 k's every year, just so he could get to 600 homers.  Ichiro stays healthy and can still run and play defense just fine, but no way he deserves a starting spot on any team besides maybe the Marlins, Astros and Cubbies.

Went 2-5 with 2 runs scored yesterday as he passed Tony Perez for 56th place (2734), one behind Goose Goslin.

Someone will have to be willing to pay him to stick around,
9/9/2013 9:59 AM
Well, the Yankees are paying him for next season.  Will he be a regular if they don't dump him on someone else?  If he gets another season like this one in next year, he's probably within 100 hits - I'm sure he'd find a non-contender willing to pick him up for the publicity boost if he's that close.  If he's a part-timer next year or has a major injury, so that he needs another 2 years beyond his current contract, then I don't know.
