SEC v. PAC-10 Challenge Topic

This thread will be the home of the Tark SEC PAC-10 Challenge. Hopefully we'll come up with a better name, but if you are familiar with my Knight Challenge, you'll want someone else in charge of that...

In the interest of simplifying the seeding process for match-ups, I'd like to go to a system inspired by the Phelan ACC-Big 10 Challenge.
  • Our system will rank teams based upon the average number of CONFERENCE WINS for each team for the previous 2 seasons.
  • Ties will be broken by average RPI.
  • Teams will be ranked 1-12 and matched against their like team from the other conference.
  • If this results in a repeat of last season's challenge, seeds will be flipped as necessary for more variety.
  • Home and away will be determined based upon last season's venue - if you played at home last season you'll default to on the road.
  • If both teams played at home/on the road in last season, the home team will be team with fewest overall challenge home games. Ties broken randomly.

*Although commenced in season 59, current formatting and Challenge record keeping dates to Season 60.

Challenge History:
It is widely believed that the SEC won the first challenge (Season 59) 7-5. Sadly, official records and all game footage were destroyed in the great WCAA housecleaning purge scandal. With a new format for determining match-ups taking root in season 60, official records for the challenge will date from that point on. Labeled the Inaugural Challenge just to be technically incorrect and haughty, the Season 60 Challenge featured 11 match-ups between some of the best and the brightest of  Tark world. Without further ado, your results:

Awesome job Dac!!!  Thanks for everything!!

dac, how does Washington state get two home games in a row and I get two away games in a row.  Ayway you can make that isn't happen with other pairings. I think you should switch to @LSU this year to be fair. I see the same thing with UK, they had two home games in a row.  Could it be that you labeled them in a different order this year. Last year you had home on the right and now on the left.  You might want to reprint this before people start scheduling.

** I initially listed these backwards as storm points out. The schedule showing now is correct (I hope!)
Sorry for any confusion.

I believe that is correct. I failed to post it here, and its lost on the CCs...

I intend to keep the "official" records from Season 60 on, and sort of count season 59 as a trial run as it were :)

I think this one was 5-4 dac - since Vanderbilt is an SEC team, right?

I am compiling all the records into a spreadsheet that will show who coached each school for each year of the challenge, if/who they played and where, and the game scores. Here is google docs link for anyone who wants to look. Anyone who knows web stuff and wants to use this data to make some kind of sortable interface would be cool... especially if it can compile the data, like records vs certain school or coach, most wins, winning %, etc...

That should say that the PAC10 cling to the overall series lead 33-28

Challenge match-ups for season 67:

As always, if you find you are on the road or at home in back-to-back seasons it is because either your opponent was facing the same situation or your school has an imbalance one way or the other. All but 2 schools are within 1 game variance of home and away (if all of this season's games are scheduled as outlined) so in the future there should be even fewer repeats regarding location. I had to adjust a number of match-ups by 1 spot to avoid repeats of last season (in one case to avoid a match-up from 2 seasons ago for variety and the new match-up was compelling). If anyone expresses an interest I can post the actual rankings according to our seeding formula.

*2/21/12 update: Arkansas did not find a human coach unfortunately. Arizona State did, and they have not indicated they do not want to participate, so hopefully that game will be scheduled. I basically had 2 options - run with the schedule I generated after the tourneys ended (which included Arkansas but left Tennessee out) or revise the schedule to remove simai Arkansas and slot most everyone else "up" one game, which in some cases resulted in repeats of this season, so some teams had to slide 2 slots, but all the humans in both conferences who wish to participate get to.  The second option is what is presented here, but it means tougher draws for most SEC teams (based on the 2 season rankings system we use...) I'm not crazy for this option, but it made more sense to let all the humans in then to have someone left out while a SEC sim got in...
  • UCLA    @    KENTUCKY
  • LSU    @    STANFORD
  • WASHINGTON ST    @    VANDERBILT
  • FLORIDA    @    ARIZONA
  • MISSISSIPPI    @    CAL
  • ALABAMA    @    WASHINGTON
  • USC    @    MISSISSIPPI ST
  • GEORGIA    @    FRESNO ST
  • OREGON ST    @    S CAROLINA
  • HAWAII    @    AUBURN
  • TENNESSEE    @    ARIZONA ST (WEEK 4)

*ALL GAMES ARE SCHEDULED. THANKS EVERYONE.  GOOD LUCK, AND HAVE FUN!
