History of founding participants

The Moravian Invitation has attracted six terrific participants for its inaugural season.  As of 12/29/2011, the six coaches have a combined record of 3582-1080(0.768) at the schools in which they currently coach.  They also have a combined record of 209-114(0.647) in NT games.  They have combined to play in eleven national championship games with three national championship victories, as well as winning three PIT titles.  Without further ado, the coaches and their teams are:

Coolman97865, who at Moravian has a record of 447-170(0.724), including 30-14(0.682) in NT games.  Coolman97865 won a national championship in season 47 and made the championship game again in season 59.  Moravian has received NT bids in each of the last ten seasons.

Helloflyers, who at Chowan has established a record of 734-276 (0.727) in his 33 seasons with the team, including a 44-24(0.647) record in NT games.  Chowan has won both a national championship (season 48) the year after falling in the title game, and a PIT championship (season 57) during helloflyers's tenure with the school.  Chowan has made the postseason in each of the last 21 seasons, and has made the NT 12 of the last 13 seasons.

Dave456 is the relative newcomer of the field.  He has posted a 242-123(0.663) record in his 13 seasons at Chicago, including a 4-5(0.444) record in NT games.  Chicago has made the NT in each of the last four seasons, with the season 63 sweet 16 run being the second deepest run in Chicago program history.

G0at is the longest tenured of the inaugural coaches, having posted a combined record of 1085-291(0.789) in his 45 seasons of coaching Massachusetts Liberal Arts, including a 48-36(0.571) record in NT games.  During his tenure, Mass. Liberal Arts has won the PIT title (season 42) and has lost once in the national championship game(season 41).  G0at is currently enjoying a run of 16 consecutive NT bids.

Hamline has enjoyed tremendous success during zbrent716’s 19 seasons with the school.  Zbrent716 has posted a record of 463-119(0.796), including an outstanding 36-13(0.735) record in NT games.  Hamline has won both a national championship (season 63) and PIT championship (season 56) under zbrent716.  Hamline has participated in four national championship games (Seasons 49, 52, 53, and 63), and five final fours (Seasons 49, 52, 53, 58 and 63).  Hamline has made the NT in 14 of the past 15 seasons.

Armyof1 has arguably the most consistent level of success of the coaches involved.  He has posted an incredible 611-101(0.858) record in his 22 seasons at Marietta, including a 47-22(0.681) record in NT games.  Under Armyof1’s tenure, Marietta has made four final four appearances (seasons 51, 53, 56, and 63) and two national championship games (seasons 51 and 56).  Additionally, Armyof1 has made the NT in each of his 22 seasons at Marietta.

Chapelhillne and Emory's bio can be found on page three of this forum.

Rules

Tiebreakers

Teams with equal wins and losses at the conclusion of the tournament will be further judged in the following way:

2 way tie:

1)      Head-to-head winner “wins” the tie

Multiple teams:

1)      Teams are considered as a subcategory and wins and losses against each other are calculated, with the team having the worst record being dropped from consideration.

2)      If possible, repeat step one until only two teams remain at which point the head-to-head winner “wins” the tie.  If at some point records between the teams are equal, move on to step three.

3)      Margin of victory (or loss) is calculated for each team against other members of the subcategory.  The bottom team will then be eliminated and the remaining teams will return to step two.

If the preceding tie-breakers are insufficient, the tie will be considered unbreakable.

Improperly Scheduled Games

1)      All games should be scheduled according to the official schedule released in the forum and/or sent over sitemail.

2)      If two teams schedule the game at the wrong location (i.e. A at B instead of B at A), the game will be considered null and the record of both teams will be (0-0) for that game.

3)      If a game is not scheduled at all, the coach(es) responsible will be considered to have forfeited the game (0-1).  Forfeits are counted as a two-point loss with respect to tie-breakers.  If a game is not scheduled and one or both of the coaches is not responsible, the game will be considered a draw (0-0) for the teams who are not responsible.

4)      Games scheduled at the correct location but during the wrong day will be counted, but this is frowned upon.

Scheduling

1.      A base schedule has been created in which every team will play either two or three home games during the tournament.  The participants will be run through a random number generator in all odd years to assign them randomly into one of the six spots.

2.      In all even numbered years, the teams will play in the reverse location from the previous season (for example if A played at B in year one, B would play at A in year 2).

I could have gone further, but I ran into the Marietta buzz saw.

Marietta was sneaky good this year.  I remember playing them in non-conf and not being scared of a single player in terms of scoring potential.  The defense was amazingly good though.

Season 66 Predictions

1. Marietta
2. Mass. Liberal Arts
3. Chowan
4. Hamline
5. Moravian
6. Chicago

It seems like there are a lot of young teams for those involved this season.  There really doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the best and the worst.  Time will certainly tell though.
