This entry concerns the same rookie pitcher I wrote about in the above post. For his latest start, I gave him no max pitch count, put all my other pitchers and regular batters on rest, and started 7 AAA/scrubs in the field behind him. In other words, he was at a much bigger disadvantage than he was in the earlier start.

The result?

Player of the Game
Kellie Bayman tosses a 1-hit shutout

And oh yeah, the team he shut out had the best record in the league heading into the game (35-15).

Something does seem amiss with this rookie pitcher. Just started him again, and he got another win, another Player of the Game (6.1 innings, 2 earned runs). He's #1 in ROY voting, 3-0 record, and a 2.84 ERA in 38 innings, which is better than my 2017 Kershaw (5.15 ERA in 57.2 IP). Maybe Kershaw can be my Mop/Long B and this Kellie fella can be my ace?

In a 1940 prog, my Ted Lyons recently dropped his first decision of the season. Prior to the loss, he'd won 27 in a row. I don't think I've ever seen a pitcher open a season with more consecutive wins than that (if you have, post your details below).

Combining his W-L record thus far in 1940 (134 games into the season) with his 1939 record of 20-4, Lyons is 47-5 in his past 1.83 seasons.

Yes the cheat codes for HOFers don't kick in until the afternoon of the 6th each month. Remember, they are changing the password for the codes on Jan. 1 for the New Year ! Get yours before the 6th.

How's this for turning a bad season around?

I have Lefty Grove in a 1940 prog. I debated cutting him when I posted my keepers, as Lefty's pretty average at the end of his career and my team already had over 1600 better innings than what Lefty could give me (going by ERC#, he was by far my worst pitcher). But he's been on my team his entire career, won 300+ games, Cy Youngs, World Series championships, etc., so I felt I owed him some loyalty. I'm a big softy, is what it is.

Lefty started the season 1-4 with a 9.33 ERA in 6 starts. At that point I took him out of the rotation and made him the back end of a tandem with righty starters.

It seemed to work. With a couple games left in the season, Lefty is 30-7 with a 4.91 ERA!

Great story crazy. It's clear that Lefty felt strongly about the support you provided him. Not simply because you allowed him a swan song season, but also because you found a slot in the rotation where he could succeed. You certainly know how to manage the personalities of your SIM stars. Nicely done.

Thanks, redwingscup. I've come to realize how easy it is to manipulate an individual pitcher's W-L record when you have a dominant team in a progressive. This is the same prog team I got five 20-game winners out of last season (and perhaps could have had six, if I'd been focused on that goal from the start).

The first post of this thread mentioned Ernie McAnally, an ordinary pitcher I had on a 1971 prog. He went 33-4; to this day in that prog (started in 1961, now in 2000) no other pitcher has won as many in a season. Not Koufax, Gibson, Carlton, Clemens, Maddux. Nope, it's Ern McAnally who strides the wins category like a Colossus!

Have you ever seen someone get credited with a win after throwing one pitch? It just happened.

For once, real life tops WIS.

(Link to 2009 boxscore showing Alan Embree earning a win by picking off Austin Kearns; no pitches thrown by Embree.)
