My OL team just won a game 1-0 off a solo shot by 1986 Vince Coleman. Consider:

1) Coleman hit 0 real life home runs in 604 at bats
2) The pitcher who gave up the home run, 1908 Bill Burns, in real life allowed 3 home runs in 164 innings
3) The game was played in the Astrodome (-4/-4 for home runs)

In an 80M theme I'm in a team is using 1964 Dick Radatz as a starting pitcher, with a maximum pitch count in most games of 85 or so. Radatz was a good reliever in 1964 (ERC# 2.22) but his IP/G was 1.99, so in-game fatigue has been taking its toll: after his first 15 starts (all at 100%) he was 0-12 with an ERA of 13.09.

In his 16th start in the most recent AM cycle, in-game fatigue didn't appear to be a factor.

Below are the win totals for the Washington franchise, from 1941-45, in the 100 Year War progressive league:

101
103
93
97
118

Despite averaging 102.4 wins a season, this team failed to make the playoffs even once.

I believe it.

I miss ginger ale. They don't have it in Italy. No culture.

Root Beer too !

A couple days ago I posted in this thread about my pitcher, 1888 Ed Seward, breaking a seven-year old Open League record for most wins by a pitcher in one season. The previous record was 77, held by 1888 Silver King; my Seward went 78-12.

In the first round of the playoffs, Seward started games 1-3-5 for me.

And lost each one!

Somewhat realistic really (unless you were Christy Mathewson in - I forget the season he won three shutouts in the Series). You used him a lot, his arm got tired, he lost in the postseason. History is full of these kinds of stories. Not your fault, I know you were careful to stay within his statistical abilities, but in RL it is not implausible.

Of course, he has to live it down now as a pitcher that can't win the big ones. Lots of company.

Seward's arm was tired? I don't know, I saw "100%" next to his name for every start.

Maybe WIS was feeding me fake news?

Crooked WIS!

The winner of each of those games was Ed Walsh ‘08, who was bitter about going 46-14, 2.51 but having to live in Seward’s shadow. Plus I have it on good authority that he was promised a case of Scotch for each time he beat Seward in the postseason. Miracle he showed for the next round.

YOU AGAIN!

After you crushed Seward in that series I used him in one more OL. Another first round exit, but that time we died even quicker so he only got two starts/losses. So in the two playoffs he went a combined 0-5, while in the two regular seasons he was something like 140-30...

In the bottom of the seventh inning, with the game tied, Boardwalk Brown entered the game. He threw one pitch, and the base runner was caught stealing for the third out. In the top of the eighth, Brown was replaced by a pinch hitter, and his team scored the winning run. Brown was credited with the win. The weirdest part: he was also named player of the game.

I think POG should be the guy that got thrown out trying to steal.

How much does Coors hurt a batter's chances for MVP, and help a pitcher's for the Cy Young?

My team in Taint's "Read Em and Weep" theme league plays in Coors. Not surprisingly we're 1st in runs scored by a fair margin (averaging 7.7 runs a game through 113 games; 2nd place is averaging 6.0 runs a game). We have the #2, 3 and 4 players in the runs created category. None of them are top 5 in MVP voting.

We're 23rd in ERA (6.25). But we have a pitcher who's #1 in Cy Young voting -- despite an ERA (5.27) that's a third of a run higher than the league average ERA (4.93).
