In 13 major league seasons, Joey Votto has caught his fair share of pop ups as the Cincinnati Reds first baseman. Amazingly though, through the first 6,828 plate appearances of his MLB career, he had never once hit a pop up that was caught by his counterpart.

That all changed Wednesday afternoon during the Reds 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pedro Báez got Votto to pop up to first baseman Cody Bellinger in foul territory. When Bellinger squeezed the ball for the final out in the eighth inning, one of MLB’s longest and most remarkable streaks was officially over.

It took Votto 1,592 games, 6,829 plate appearances and 27,918 pitches to be retired on what is a common play in MLB.

At different stages of Game 5 we led 6-2, 8-3 and 12-7 ... before losing, 13-12.

You don't experience many "firsts" as an SLB owner after you've been around for nearly 13 years and 600 teams, but I did in the pm cycle. My Random Captain "Three Finger Browns" were up three games to zero in the second round, and I'd already started scouting my possible World Series dance partner. Why not? Everything was rolling along, all my players were at 100% thanks to clinching the wild card a few games early and sweeping the first round. We'd beaten our opponent (going back to the regular season) seven straight times.

And then?

Four straight losses.

Oh, the humanity.

Despite averaging 102.4 wins a season, this team failed to make the playoffs even once.

UPDATE: In 1946, this team won 96 games -- and once again failed to make the playoffs. If you're scoring at home, that's an average of 101.3 wins a season over 6 seasons (1941-46) with no post-season games.

By the way, talk about wrong place at the wrong time. If Washington were in the NL instead of the AL, they would have won the pennant (and thus gone straight to the World Series) five times. The sixth time they would have had to play a play-in game to break a first place tie.

No, he's a good owner, and a gentleman. He's been in this prog all 46 of its seasons and he's put together a few dynasty-type runs, too.

I've had a good rivalry with another owner from the prog discussed above. We're in opposite leagues, and our teams have met in the World Series in 1917, '19, '20, '37, '38, '39 and now '46. My team came out on top the first six times, but in '46 we finally took the L in a thrilling 7-game series.

Alas, the owner of the other team was not around to enjoy his long-awaited victory, as he went AWOL during the 1946 draft. His team was entered by the commish and ran on autopilot all season. That's right, a championship ring for the much-maligned Sparky.

Crummiest Prog Season for an Above Average Starting Pitcher Who Not Once Pitched Tired

2004 Ryan Drese.

Real life: 208 IP, ERA 4.20, ERC+ 106.

For me: 198 IP, 9.00 ERA.

Missed the playoffs by a couple games, and can pin it completely on this stumblebum.
