Wrong Goat Identified Dept.

Just had a game sim where my opponent's starting pitcher got Player of the Game (sarcastic edition):

"Howie Pollet gets shelled."

Pollet gave up 6 runs in 3.2 IP, but only 2 of the runs were earned.

How'd he give up 4 unearned runs?

His shortstop Nanny Fernandez made 5 errors!

I have 1911 Charlie Smith in an 80M theme league. I just gave him his first (and probably last) start of the season, as he has only 40 RL IP. Max pitch count was set at 75. Sparky left him in 10 pitches longer, since he wound up throwing a no-no.

And he would have had a perfect game -- except he plunked the opposing starter.

Over in Homer Madness it looks like '27 Ruth and '23 Cy Williams will break their personal bests of 152 and 116 homers.

Ramon Martinez has given up 193 dingers in 30 appearances.

Rough Exits Dept.

Just had a team knocked out in the second round of the playoffs in an 80M theme league. We had the most wins in the regular season, and allowed the fewest runs, but heading into Game 6 we were facing elimination. Every subpar pitcher was put on rest. The available pitchers' ERC#'s were as follows:

2.01
2.02
2.04
2.23

All were at 100% entering the game; all had conservative pitch counts. All four were used.

We lost 16-0!

In a league where the regular season just finished, here are my Nap Lajoie’s stats:



Thru 110 games, he had a hit in 100 of them (91%)

he slumped a little at the end, but still finished with a hit in 141 of the 160 games he played (88%)

Two first basemen from a 1947 prog:

233 PA, .232/.408/.277, 2 HR

230 PA, .318/.478/.653, 17 HR

The first one is Hank Greenberg.

The second one is also Hank Greenberg, after he was traded to another team.

I commish Random Captain (90M theme), and therefore can view a sortable list of players' real life stats. In the current season, my PH'er 1938 Merv Connors had the best SLG/OPS of any batter in the league, with a RL line of:

.355 / .437 / .710 / 1.146

He was always the first batter off the bench in close games, and also started a few must-win games at 1B.

We missed the wild card by 1 game, and I blame it entirely on Mervelous Merv. His sim line:

.190 / .284 / .214 / .498

In 95 plate appearances -- most of them with the game hanging in the balance, where a hit would have meant a win -- he batted in 2 measly runs!

Despite averaging 102.4 wins a season, this team failed to make the playoffs even once.

UPDATE: In 1946, this team won 96 games -- and once again failed to make the playoffs. If you're scoring at home, that's an average of 101.3 wins a season over 6 seasons (1941-46) with no post-season games.

By the way, talk about wrong place at the wrong time. If Washington were in the NL instead of the AL, they would have won the pennant (and thus gone straight to the World Series) five times. The sixth time they would have had to play a play-in game to break a first place tie.

UPDATE II: 1947. Team won 103 games. Missed the playoffs.

Which now makes 711 wins in 7 seasons with no post-season games.

And yes, they once again would have won the pennant if they played in the other league.
