Lead by example. 

What do you think the reaction would have been if Obama had said "Guys, I'm staying in Washington.   If you want to negotiate, I'll be here.  We have a job to do"?

Hell, I'd have been singing his praises.

The media blitz is to blame this on House Republicans.

Obama has no reason to try to save America from the disaster of the cliff it it makes him look good to fail!

No one in Washington has any incentive to avert the cliff.  If they vote in a package now, both sides have to answer for the fact that they softened their stances - Dems that they cut entitlements and Repubs that they raised taxes.  If they allow the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts to hit, they can come in shortly after the fact and vote in new tax cuts and expenditures.

Boehner made the move to the center.

The hard right abandoned him.

The left wouldnt go out and meet him so he looked weak and couldnt sell the moderation.

The left killed this.

It's a swampism.

Try to follow.

If the center right and center left could get together they have enough voted to pass anything.

When the hard right abandoned Boehner the left treated that as a win for their side.

They were laughing at the Republicans hoping they would fall apart and they could get everything they want.

Do you get it now?

Couldn't the left center right and the right center left still work out a deal?  Or did the right left center right and left right center left block any chances of that happening?
