Makes sense. My pitchers were all good range but also all pretty ok

another hack would be to draft guys who made a ton of errors along with the great range

I've tried +++range teams 3-4 times in the past, while trying to make the playoffs, all made it except one but none won the WS.
My best total was 198+ plays.
I'm now drafting another one but this time throwing all hopes of winning out the window just to go all out +plays.
So other than going for the usual A+++ guys at every fielding positions, I'm drafting pitchers with max range but also high OAV and still have to choose between Hilltop or Coors but now leaning to Hilltop.
One thing I'm still not sure though, like most here I use to think that low K pitchers would help get more +plays but reading an earlier post in this thread, Trentonjoe was saying
"Yeah, the SIM decides "Hit or Out" before Strikeout. Since the out is all ready decided, a "+" play can't happen."
My question is, yes the hit or out has been decided before the K so that would mean that the type of out, (K, grounder or fly) wouldn't affect + plays?
I mean, does the engine first give a hit then factors in range and takes it away with a "+" play or is the range already calculated before it gives a hit and it just goes as a "+ play" out?
When exactly does the engine decides what type of an out it's going to be?
Reason for this question is that some of the modern pitchers have a lot better range than these old deadballers but also strike out a lot more batters.

Anyhow, congrats on the 233+ plays ozo, it's the highest total mentionned in this thread unless I missed something. Will be trying to beat that number!

My goal with Home On The Range was to field a competitive team w/ over 200 + plays. Accomplished the first part -- won 102 regular season games (OL), coasted to a division win and reached the LCS where I inexplicably blew a 3-0 lead and lost in 7. The second part of my goal was a dismal failure w/ only 172 + plays. Trying again w/ a hitter's ballpark that creates more chances and A+ range pitchers who can contribute.

Here are the pitchers. All the regulars have A+ range except Gilmore, who will spot start in interleague games and mop and should put a lot of balls in play. Ballpark is Ameriquest in Arlington, a hitter's park but not extreme.

One of the few things in life I don't have to worry about.

I wonder how many you'd get if your entire pitching staff was 200k pitchers
7/16/2019 3:27 AM
Is there an optimal salary cap level for maximizing + plays? IMHO, the answer might depend on how competitive an owner wanted their team to be as well as the makeup of the other teams in the league.

I was starting to head in that direction after testing something in a current theme league where I'm having to tank games due to totally under-drafting IPs, I had forgotten how much toll a DH can take on pitching staffs...
Anyhow, I'm starting a 200k mop-up who's at 0% with a 200k "set-up" also at 0% and needless they're being severely trashed but I do see an increase of +plays, which you would expect when you're giving up 30+ hits in a game...
I'm sure if anyone did something like that with a full line-up of A+++++ you'd get a huge + play "bonus" but it would start getting absurd to just tank every game for the sake of "+ plays" so after thinking about it I dropped the idea.

After this discussion, it seems like no because there is tension in both directions (i.e. higher caps = better hitters = more opportunities, but lower caps = worse pitchers = more opportunities). It might just come down to having the most A+++++ players, which I think is possible around 100-110M.
7/16/2019 11:16 AM
I think it could be done in the $80-$100M range, depending on the quality of the pitching. A quick perusal would tell me that players at the seven defensive positions with A+++++ range could be had for around $40M in salary, depending on how you feel about errors. Add in a strong defensive catcher and that leaves $35-$55M for a pitching staff depending on the cap. I just might try this in the near future.

My numbers were slightly low. I found the 7 players who I would want for $45.9 million. Someone could knock a few million of these numbers with some different choices but it will still be at least $40M for the 7 players.
