Turn off Minimum Roster Size Prior to the Season Topic

In the absence of a more functional method of making the many player moves necessary to properly populate the minor league teams after the off-season retirements, FA, etc it would be helpful if we could turn off the minimum roster size requirement.

This would allow an owner to more easily move players up and down. Without having to scan through a huge list of pending transactions.

The minimum roster function could then be turned on again prior to the season or even as early as the Rule 5 roster freeze.

God that is a pain in the a**.

Can't promote from aa to fill the AAA roster because now the AA roster is short. and so it goes all the way down, til you have 30 pending transactions and a helluva time trying to keep track of who you've already moved where.

Sucks big time!

While I agree, I know it will annoy you when I point out why it's the way it is.

I assume you and I wouldn't start a season with 11 players in LoA.  But someone would.    And they'd be up against the cap with no way to fix it.

9/14/2012 10:43 AM
So, if I don't touch my roster I would start with 9 players at AAA. The minimum only makes it more difficult to fix the problem and does not thing to correct it.
9/14/2012 11:40 AM
The point is if they remove the minimum, then if people started signing minor league FAs to fill their aaa or aa squad and then ran out of money they'd be stuck with 11 guys in low A with no way to fix it.

I don't understand how the minimum roster requirement stops someone from using up all of their money? Also, most teams have a number of players sitting in RL that can be promoted to fill other slots.
The minimum appears to be shut off for RL and if a team runs out of money they won't be able to fill that roster....even after the draft.

I guess I don't see how the minimum roster requirement hindering promotions/demotions before the season starts is liable to cause any more problems than already exist.

You can't make ANY moves if the minor league roster requirement is not met.   So maybe you're just ******* away a season.
However, when your minor league games are not played, someone will report it to WifS.   And they will fix it for you.    That said, if the games are playing and you have 11 players on your LoA, there will be no reason for you to fix it.

Now, the only way you can get under the minimums is FA/retirements, and at the very least you can't make things worse by moves. If you waive it altogether, there's nothing stopping someone from all but emptying out a level, and when the restriction comes back in, the only consequence is they can't move anyone else out. I'd be all for this if there was also added a good way to enforce compliance after the limit comes back, otherwise I would prefer to leave as is. I just promote from the bottom up, since the rookie league doesn't have the limit.

There weren't enforced minimums initially, right? I remember having an epidemic of minor league games not simming early on.

Rookie League does have the limit from the time of the draft until the end of the season.  I believe it has no limit from rollover until the draft.
9/14/2012 12:58 PM
Well aware of that, but it seemed unnecessary since the discussion is about offseason moves...
9/14/2012 1:02 PM
Al, where are they emptying a level to? Presumably they're sending them to another level that needs players. So there is no net loss of players on the teams rosters. In my 20+ seasons I've never had a rollover occur where all of my levels had 20+ so it's happening. I'm just suggesting a way to take the pain out of making your teams legal.

The minimums also don't protect against a team having no catchers, no MIs or no starting pitchers. There are plenty of ways for the owner that doesn't care to destroy a team...making it harder on the ones that do care really is of no benefit.

9/14/2012 1:17 PM
Mike, congratulations you made a bunch of moves with little thought. A monkey could probably do that. The player that wants to put the right players at the right level to promote their development as well as field competitive teams at all levels might do it a bit differently.
