Night 3 Preview:

Montevallo at Longwood (-18):
Muskienut37 takes Montevallo to Farmville, VA to face #6 Longwood.  The Mont's triangle press scheme is led by the trio of Scott Foster (14.2 ppg), Bradley Garnica (10.2 ppg), and Hugh Situ (10.0 ppg).  Montevallo's 2 losses have been to ranked teams (Mercyhurst & Cal Poly Pomona), but muskienut37 hopes to break that string tonight.  Montevallo has been outrebounding  opponents by 9 per game.

Fresh off a national championship, bbunch has put together a typical Longwood team.  Fun fact (unless you're muskienut37):  Longwood has finished no lower than 7th in RPI 8 of the last 9 seasons.  Longwood owns wins against ranked SE Oklahoma St and Incarnate Word (although that was decided by a single point), with the lone loss coming versus New Jersey Tech.  Michael Schizer (13.0 ppg) and Robert Byers (12.8 ppg) provide the offense for Longwood.  Bbunch's team is holding opponents to 39% shooting.

Lees-McRae at N Alabama (-7):  Dennyj brings ten scholarship players and ten underclassmen into Florence, AL to battle #23 N Alabama.  Despite the extreme youth of Lees-McRae, dennyj has them at 3-3.  Three players score in double-digits:  The lone senior Alexander Merritt (12.2 ppg), plus sophs Cory Shaw (12.7 ppg) and Joseph Hayes (10.3 ppg).  Coach is doing a nice job with limited talent this season.

Ragizzy has N Alabama running on all cylinders this season.  The lone blemish on the record is a loss to undefeated and currently #10 Cal Poly Pomona.  N Alabama owns a victory over ranked Adams St.  Opponents have to contend with two towers in the middle of N Alabama's motion/zone:  Augustus Ziller (18.0 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and William Hogan (11.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg).  Darnell Lesher provides the outside threat (11.0 ppg, 47% from 3).  N Alabama's five seniors may make things tough on the young Lees-McRae squad.
Kind words to point out a very bad recruiting class. :)

Longwood 66, Montevallo 56:  The Mont jumped out to a quick lead, but Longwood proved to be the better team in this one.  Longwood took a double-digit lead midway through the first half and didn't look back.  Longwood's defense (holding Montevallo to 40% shooting) and offensive efficiency (53% from the floor themselves) stretched the lead to as much as 18 in the 2nd half.  Longwood's backcourt of Schwizer and Davis combined for 25, while JUCO transfer Brian Gillum came off the bench for 11.  Every active player scored for Montevallo, with Scott Foster scoring a team-high 9.

N Alabama 55, Lees-McRae 48:  Dennyj gameplanned to counter N Alabama's strengths, but it wasn't enough toget the victory.  Both teams came out in slowdown, Lees-McRae collapsing hard inside to stop N Alabama's towers.  The result was an ugly first half with N Alabama grinding out a 24-13 lead, both teams combining to miss all ten 3-point attempts.  The offense improved a bit for both sides during the second stanza.  Lees was able to get as close as 3 on a couple of occasions, but couldn't make the final push.  Ziller & Hogan combined for 24 pts & 12 boards and they received help from the backcourt of Lesher and Frank Davis, combining for 18 pts.  C Ron Griffin reached 11 pts for Lees-McRae.

Drury at Barton (-5):  Bentlie29 takes Drury to Wilson, NC to battle jtmatt and Barton, the winner of this game reaching .500 through 8 games.  Drury is led by Sr SG Ronald Basaldua (12.0 ppg) and Jr PF David Holmes (11.3 ppg).  Surprising freshman PF Daniel Mullinax is chipping in 10.7 ppg.  Drury is holding teams to 41% shooting with their man defense.

Barton's backcourt dynamic duo, Robert Cromer and Troy Cue, average nearly 32 ppg between them in Barton's motion offense.  Barton has been well matched with its opponents this season.  Tonight's 5 point spread is the largest in any of Barton's 8 matchups to date.

Busy day today, I won't have time to do the recap of last night (Barton won, CVAC up 4-2). And if anybody wants to preview tonight's, go for it. I'll be back on it Thursday.

Queens U (NC) 97, Incarnate Word 95 (OT): It took overtime, but young Queenswith only 3 upperclassmen proved they were King over the Incarnate Word Cardinal.  This game was back and forth, with players on both teams in foul trouble.  Queens was up 7 with 1:15 remaining in regulation, but only made 2 of 4 free throws and IW managed to make a trio of threes, the last coming by Ronald Cotner with 0:02 remaining to force OT.  OT was tight throughout, with IW's Danny Hampton draining a 3 with 0:19 left to knot it at 95 each. IW Sr PG Michael Marlow fouls Ruben Fessler with 0:04 and Fessler makes both for the final margin.  It's a shame either team had to lose this one (especially Incarnate Word).

This game likely locks up this year's Challenge in favor of the CVAC.  With only 11 games this year, the Heartland needs a sweep from here on out to win.

St Edwards 86, Erskine 83:   Funngun10 and St Edwards did their part for the Heartland, holding off fillthelane and Erksine in a contrast of styles.  St Edwards led most of the way, stretching the lead out to 15 on a couple of occasions during the 2nd half.  St Edwards made a living at the free throw stripe, going 36-of-46, versus Erskine's efficient but lower volume 12-of-14.  St Edwards eschewed the three-ball, not attempting a single shot while Erskine bombed away at a 9-of-26 clip. Erskine made 3 treys during the last 0:30 to tighten it up but it wasn't enough.  Clifford Nebel led an otherwise balanced attack with 23 for St Edwards.  Andrew Wilson made 6 three-pointers and totalled 22 points in the losing effort.

CVAC 5, Heartland 3.  Three games remaining tonight, all involving ranked teams.  Heartland needs an unlikely sweep.  Good Luck!!!

Congrats to the CVAC on their Challenge victory!

W Alabama 67, Limestone 61:  bowen_brian has W Alabama off to their best start in his six seasons at the helm.  Brian xavier's Limestone team is alays a post-season participant, but eight point dogs in this one.  A slow-paced 1st half and staunch man-to-man defense by both sides resulted ina a 28-19 W Alabama lead at the break.  Things picked up in the second half, but the game was won at the free-throw line for bowen_brian.  W Alabama went to the line 32 times in the half, making 25 of them.  Limstone's Michael Bently close the gap to 2 with 0:14 left on a made 3, but W Alabama's proficiency from the stripe was just too much.  William Pratt led Limestone with 12, while bigman Dexter Clayton paced W Alabama with 24.

St Mary's (TX) 78, Pfeiffer 66:  One-point favorite St Mary's jumped out quickly and never looked back in this contest.  Mduncanhogs protected the paint with his man-to-man defense and Pfeiffer couldn't take advantage from 3.  St Mary's had 4 double-digit scorers, Terry Combs and James Johnson putting up 15 apiece.  Pfeiffer's Derek Mildenstein was effective scoring 20 on 8-of-13 shooting, but the rest of the squad managed a dreadful 16-of-45 (35.5%) from the floor.

Belmont Abbey 75, Rockhurst 59:  Rockhurst had a tough draw (as evidence by the 13 point spread) as Belmont Abbey is one of the premiere teams in Iba this season.  The Abbey didn't disappoint either, as their press forced 21 Rockhurst turnovers. Those TOs, plus a 14 point advantage from the stripe were the difference for crashdive.  The Rock did  some good things, deweycox's team held Belmont Abbey to 42.6% from the floor.  Both teams made 23 FGs.  The Rock just had a hard time keeping up with Belmont's athletes and depth.

CVAC 6, Heartland 5, with one game unscheduled.  Each conference has 8 teams in the top 64 on the projection report.  Hopefully we can represent 1/4 of the NT field come tourney time.  Good luck in your brutal conference play and we'll see you in the post-season!
