Most of those starters have defensive value. DH's don't. You don't put a .290/.330/.390 guy at DH. If he can't play the field he goes to the bench.

I assume your problem is power.   2011 Posada, 387 PA .235/.315/.398.

A guy hitting .290 has value.   Obviously, you'd like .275/.360/.475 at DH.   There just aren't many of them.  You can build a team a bunch of different ways.   1B/LF/RF/DH don't have to be power hitters any more than C only value is calling a game or SS value comes from fielding.

Of course there are a bunch of ways to build a team but the DH's only job is to hit. So you want the best hitter you can find to fill that role. 

2011 Posada sucked. There are tons of guys who will be reasonably attainable who can hit better than .290/.330/.390.

Freddie Freeman, Cody Ross, Angel Pagan, Chris Johnson, Justin Morneau, Allen Craig, Alex Rios, Adam Laroche, Cory Hart, Jason Kubel, Chris Davis, Alfonso Soriano, Paul Goldschmidt, the list goes on. Not all of those guys will still be hitting like they did in 2012 in 2015, but other guys will. All these guys have league average-ish OBPs (~.330) and SLG in the mid to high .400's.

Shockingly, other teams bid on players too. 

And the list does not go and on.  If it did, I'm sure you'd go on and on.

Yeah, other teams bid, but if the Padres can get Quentin for two minor league relief pitchers, I'm sure the Yankees and their league leading revenue can figure out how to get a decent hitter with the money they save by not resigning Jeter.

Well, the only thing I'd bring to this is the marketing for 4000 hits in a Yankee uniform.

But, with that said, who did the Yanks DH this year?    Why didn't they get a Quentin for 2 minor league RP?

You're right. The Yankees were lucky to get the to playoffs after being horribly mismanaged. It's a good thing Cano had such an awesome year and Jeter found the fountain of youth (at least with the bat).

Yankees used their DH mostly as a "rest the old guy" spot in the lineup.

I'm right in that you don't get to pick 25 players and then let everyone else build their teams.   Once the Yanks traded Montero, they shifted their DH plan to allow Jeter and A-Rod to get some AB VL and signed Chavez/Ibanez to see if one of them could hit still RH.  

There's no reason, assuming he's still capable and willing to take the "proper" pay, the Yanks couldn't/wouldn't sign Jeter to get 400ish DH AB for a couple of seasons.   If he's demanding 10m per to DH in 110 games, well, there's really nothing to discuss.  Then again, he might still be capable of playing SS or he might move to LF/RF.

It's one thing to fall back on Ibanez/Chavez/Arod when you make a trade in the offseason to shore up your pitching staff. It's another to purposely sign an 41 year old former shortstop to a contract extension so that he can be a below average DH. Especially when you're the muthafuckin' YANKEES.

BL if you look at the DHs this year, they're generally not all mashers.  Guys who can hit and really can't play a position.  The guys you named all play a position pretty well.

Jeter's going to ask for 10 mil.  You know he is.  

If somehow they agree to a $4 mil deal to keep him around, I can understand it.

They are mostly OF/1B types who would be perfectly acceptable DHs. Better choices than a 41 year old former SS who probably won't be able to hit much anymore.

Truth of the matter is I don't think Jeter will "stick around" to hit a landmark.    I think he'll want to retire as a SS only.   So all this DH/LF talk is probably nonsensical.  So, really, he'll probably have to maintain skill in the field for this to even be a discussion in two years.
