Here are some open league tips, based on the salary structure and sim engine as of September 2014.
These are only suggestions, you can build a successful OL team without following all of these suggestions.

Drafting

Draft 2 forwards that meet the following criteria:
games played % >= 75
shooting % >= 20
defensive rating <= 40
shots per game <= 4
goals per game >= 0.25
points per game >= 0.50

Draft 1 forward that meets the following criteria:
games played % >= 75
defensive rating >= 70
Salary <= $3.5M

These 3 players should be forward line 1.  Repeat this for forward lines 2 and 3.  With regards to forward line 4, you can either repeat this criteria again or draft 3 minimum salary players (2 offensive forwards and 1 defensive forward).

Draft 5 defensemen who meet the following criteria:
games played % >= 75
defensive rating >= 70
Salary <= $5M

Draft 2 minimum salary defensemen and 1 minimum salary forward.

Draft 3 goalies who meet the following criteria:
games played % <= 30
save % >= 90

Roster Management

You will get 3 minor league forwards, 2 defensemen, 1 goalie.  The forwards can be used if one of your forwards gets injured or suspended.  Use the 2 minor league defensemen and 2 minimum salary defensemen to platoon the 6th defensemen slot.  Use the goalie to run a 4 goalie platoon during the regular season.

In-Game Strategy

During even strength, set your forward lines to conservative and your defensemen lines to rarely shoot.
Been away from this for a while.
My top line is Cassels 62 assists. 3.5 mill 52 + 41 Vaive with LW Helman.79
.D = rubber stamp 93's Daneyko and 19 assists Foote D 79 pr 3 both PP.

Sound workable? 50 mill league. didn't draft anyone HUGE like Mario or 99.

Weakest attendance is Bouchard 66/80 all others 85% pgp +

Does anyone have a theory as to why 14-15 Justin Faulk is so cheap?

No idea. 02/03 Rob Blake has nearly identical stats with Def rating 2 points lower but costs an extra $3.5M.

That's a bug. 100%. He's miscalculated.

At the moment, there are at least 3 defensemen seasons (all within the last few years) that are miscalculated.

Thanks for the info NC, I'm trying it out in an EX right now.  What kind of salary are you using for the top 3 lines?  High medium low or balanced.  Also noticed that I had to drop my D salary down to about 4 mil avg and that barely left money for 3 goalies.  Any extra input would be very helpful.  My first two full seasons were a total disaster.
In an open league, u don't need to spend more than $4M on any defensemen.
Kind of safe to go with Byfuglien at about $4.2m with nice offensive numbers.. He should sell for about 6 million. Other bargains are Faulk rated 80d, Hamilton rated 83d, and those are my usual choices for the 50m leagues.. Add Arbour - Smith (93) and Lashoff and you have a good back six..

Just curious How would the drafting rules change for a league with a 100 mil cap?
I've played a few of these and can't get much further that the first round of the playoffs.
thanks in advance for any help.
You need Gretzky and the 87 Goals one is the best value and r.o.i. Put him with Finnigan 95, and a feeder who still scores goals eg: Dave Taylor D 62. That's about $21.5 mill. Now draft Duggan and Langlois. Duggan will play and Langlois (D 91) will relieve him if he goes down for two. Now you are at $21 mill . Draft the rest of your team. You have roughly $79 million left

Go cheap but high D on the back six. Daneyko95 and Howe 94, Awrey95 and Doughty 94, then Arbour 93 and Faulk D 80. + $25.6m approx
Now you have $53.4m for 3 lines and a pair of goalies

..I will take a 91.1% goalie who played 67/82 whatever... about $4.3m and a backup at $2.5m maybe 90.5%

That's another $6.8m, so about $ 46.6m for the rest. Good luck.

Right now Chuck has a 175m league and it's just over half full. June 21 18

You will see guys who have $7 million dollar 93% goalies, and three 97 D rated Def men, Stick where you are at. Your goalies might even outperform them.. and half those high priced d end up a minus 14 after 45 games. I won't take them unless a huge cap league... although Frig 96 often ends up on my 100m teams

Letang 95d, Doughty 94d, Hedman 90, Byfuglien 90, Suter 86, Klingberg 87, Hamilton 83, Muzzin 81, Faulk 80, Klingberg 74 (not so much) and the best of them all: Gostisbehere 69 and a mere $1.4 million. Happy to give up 22 D points and gain $2.5 million bux. .. although Faulk is imo the better choice. give up 12 d points, save $1.5 million

You don't need a 3 goalie system Craig. Draft a goalie with about 75-80% games played with a good save %, and a back-up with usually the money you have left after filling out your roster. My back-up usually costs around $230-350,000 and I play him in around 20-25 games per season to keep my starter rested for the playoffs. Also, don't overpay for goals from your defensemen. You can draft 6 dmen for about a $3.6 milllion average with an average d rating of 90.
Not many people use the 3 goalie system.  I use it because it's a slightly more efficient use of salary than the 2 goalie system.  If you decide to use the 2 goalie system, ur drafted backup goalie should be a minimum salary player (since u can use the minor league goalie for a few games during the season).
With me, the 3rd goalie just runs the table once that nice little 'x' appears beside the team. Sometimes, in the $50m sim, a $400g goalie with maybe 35/80 games and about 87% tops will run away with it, showing around 89% or more and making the $2.2 million starter 88.5% you drafted look like a sieve with 50 extra holes

Eddie Mio took me to a final and he was $165,.000

Agree, but now Byfuglien is only $4.3 mill and he is a D 90, and similar stat D men run around $6.5 mill. Another bargain is Justin Faulk. He is just $ 2.5 million and he played a full season, D 80 with 15 goals , and a ton of assists. He should have been priced at around $4.2 million/ My fav tenders in the 50m sim are the 87% saving Mcauley at just under a million and Mio and Wendyl Young are great backups at 165g apiece/ D men are the D 90 to 93 rates Harris, Arbour, Alex Smith, Lashoff, and you can use Gilbert Delorme D 91, 75% pgp on pair 3 with Faulk, He might not even go down for 2 or 4 games, and he does well. If he does get inj for 2 or 4 you can run with 5 D easily. A popular alternative to Delorme is Klingberg D rated 87 and he is roughly $3.4 mill. played 65/82 and goes good

Daneyko D 95 about $4.5m and I always like Doughty D 94 underpriced at $5m and he is like 7 plus 39 Assists missed no games. Another one is Letang and he played about 69/82 D 95 rate.. $5 mill. Arbour 93 goes on pair 3 with D 90 rated Dustin B at $4.3 million. Some guys like to go with Orr in the 100m sim, but he is Pac man with the Cap. Doughty 94 - Frig 96.... Daneyko 95- and Byfuglien 90 then pair 3 maybe Arbour 93 and Letang 95.. that gives you a solid Defence just under $28m.. On all pairs, I set D men at seldom shoot so they pass. Incl PP

Some guys will go all out with the D 99 hamhuis, but I find that for the extra 3 D points, you get more or less hosed. Another bargain is Karlsson D rated 96 and 12 goals. He is under $7 m and could be over $8. WIS gave us a few gifts with some of the 14-15 D men and also 2016-17. Hedman D 90 is worth maybe $8.4 million and is priced at $ 5.8m 66 plus 56 and he played a full season.

Goalies in 100m sim: I like Brodeur at 91.1% around $.6 m is enough though. Lots of guys go with an over priced 92.8% goalie only to be shut out by a guy who is 40% cheaper. I won a cup with the 91% Brodeur.. $100m sim

All that said, I stink in the post season,.. but I hope that helps someone

SIM GLICH.. but I almost always use him, even in a 100m sim. He seldom flops
