I think Billy Butler at 55 is the steal of the draft to date

You're probably right. I think you can tell from my comments that I prize defense, and Butler has none. 'at's why.

Been busy teaching the last few days, so let's catch up a little on the week's activities now:

Note: I earlier posted that the player average is $25 ($1000/40-man roster), but that's not realistic. We're building 25-man rosters and stashing away some other, cheap dudes. So let's amend: $900 for a 25-man roster = $36 per. $100 for a 15-man reserve roster = $6-7 per. That's more like it. Apply these figures to the comments below.

Surprises
Tuesday, 10/23
AJ Ellis $69--solid numbers and defense in 2012, dropped into the middle of an otherwise uninteresting career. I bid on Ellis and would love to have his line and glove, but at double the average player cost?
Robinson Cano $161--Miggy @ 250, Braun at 233, and Cano at 161. After McCutcheon and Trout, Cano is the 3rd highest salaried player, and offers A/B defense. A relative steal.
Pedro Ciriaco $76--wha? He sported a nifty .293 average in 272 PA's, but where's the power(.390 SLG)? And his glove is a D. Either someone is a Boston fan--or is betting big on Pedro's future.
Jared Burton $119--fine closer numbers(63 innings/.91 whip/.186 oav), but at what cost?

Wednesday, 10/24
Yoenis Cespedes $201--Wow. 20% of the budget for a 292/356/505 line. Cespedes ranks 51st in position player salary, but 3rd in league salary thus far. (It should be noted that this buy might be the favorite buy in the league so far for 23 teams.)
Jamey Carroll $43--This 2B has no stick(268/343/317), but dig it: he's defense is actually better at SS than 2B. He's an A+/A at SS in 537 PAs. For just a few $ more than average. Wish I had done this.

Thursday, 10/25
Yasmani Grandal $52--Great prospect. Only 200 ABs this year. Not quite a steal, though. To renew his salary will be double the average.
Prince Fielder $133--We have returned to earth.
RA Dickey $125--A much better deal than Cueto/Darvish/Cahill. Dickey is the 4th salaried pitcher. Maybe his price came down because chicks don't love the knuckle ball.

Friday, 10/26
Carl Crawford $46--125 PAs and terrible defense and someone up and pays this has been almost $50. Must be a fan of Southern California baseball.
Aroldis Chapman $99--Maybe the most dominate relief arm. Not bad, not great.

Thanks on Carroll! Your absolutely right on the ss defensive rating. I targeted him due to that and the .343 obp so he won't hurt my offense bc he'll at least get on base.

In regards to Ellis, he is the best C off the board so far, so I don't know if it will be totally out of line once the bigger names start to go.  It's probably a bit much, but quality Catcher PAs are going to be tough to come by and didn't want to scramble looking for any at the end.

Nice write up though.

So Todd's win of Gio Gonzalez for 140 and Kevin Frandsen for 22 leaves him with $51 left for the last 15 players he needs to get to 25.  He has an unbelievable starting rotation, but will he be able to mash together a starting lineup and bullpen?

We need to stage an intervention with a few owners to get them to slow down. Conversely, we need to kick a few others in the ***(DodgerDon) or they're going to field a team of last names from S-Z. Everyone knows you can't run a competitive operation while ignoring the first 2/3 of the alphabet. Screws up the exercise line and payroll office.

If a player has 100 left and needs 12 spots to get to 25 players, they can only bid 89 on one player.

Let's say this owner needs 10 players more, has 100 and wins the following bids one night.

60
24
8
3
3
3
2
1

He obviously went over. In this case I will award him the highest bids I can and still stay within the cap.

In this case he would win the 60, 24, 8,  2 and 1 players and would have 5 left for his remaining five players.

If an owner spends his 1000 without allowing for reserve players, they should NOT be permitted to add any more players to their roster

No... my team was completely screwwed once I won both Cueto & Darvish on the same day, lol... But I liked Gio more than Cain, Cueto, & Darvish, so I was bidding $140 regardless... I'm amazed I got him that cheap and no one seems to be going after starting pitching.  Those teams who DO need starting pitching, start bulking up on extra bats & reievers and I guess we'll try to work out trades after the auction... I'm keeping Gio & Cain & Bucholtz, but Cueto & Darvish are on the table... been too busy to get a trade thread going but maybe we need to get one rolling so we can start seeing who has too much of what & try to match players up.

If Todd has 15 slots to fill, and only $11 after signing Frandsen... Frandsen must go back into the FA pool. Todd should not be allowed to have spots on the 25 man roster that do not cost at least $1, correct?
10/30/2012 11:05 PM
If Todd has no one to trade with he's screwed, regardless
10/31/2012 12:01 AM
Todd shouldn't have been given his last two players which put him over the limit. Since I rostered Frandsen and Gio the same day, I've given him the option of which one he wants to keep. The other will be sent back like a tied bid.

If anyone has been hit by this storm, let us know what happened.

I can report all clear in West Texas.

Is toddleduc really Ben Bernanke in real life?

Since every day when we bid we get ALL the players we win the bid for whether we like it or not.

Todd shouldn't get either player then since he doesn't have the funds for what he won that day. It might prevent this similar situation to occur again.

Also I strongly disagree with Todd getting to choose and/or sending a player back. Just give BOTH players to the 2nd place bidder,

Fair punishment for not having the funds when you bid, then people have to be more careful when they get to the end. Just my opinion
