Every day we don't deal with the debt/deficit, it gets bigger.
So?
11/16/2012 5:26 PM
You don't know why that's bad?
11/16/2012 6:11 PM
No, I'm saying that that wouldn't motivate people to change who they vote for. The debt and deficit don't negatively affect our lives in a way that's easily perceived. Study after study has shown that voters don't give a flying **** about the debt or the deficit.
11/16/2012 6:28 PM
I think you're underestimating what voters give a flying **** about.  The ever growing national debt was one of the major themes of this year's campaign.
11/16/2012 8:44 PM
Yep, and it was so important to voters that they reelected Obama and democrats gained seats in congress.
11/16/2012 9:36 PM
So all is good?  The deficit/debt can be ignored?  That's quite a relief.

The system isn't designed for easy change. Only a third of the senate seats were up for election, the congressional districts are gerrymandered, and the incumbent president has a big advantage running for re-election.

A third of the Senate and all the House and the President were up for grabs.

The house had a pretty big margin for the Pubs. And they kept almost all of it.

Senate and Pres stayed the same.

How did both of these happen? How could people look at what was going on and not go for a change either way.

I think you missed this, tec.

The economy is in the crapper, the debt is skyrocketing and we are slipping off the top of the mountain.
The economy is improving and the deficit/debt don't affect a person's day to day life.
And this.

Really? You believe that the deficit /debt doesn't affect us? WOW!

You do know that someday it has to be paid back, right? In 4 years Obama raised your share of the deficit (if you are an American citizen) from $30,000 to $50,000.

If we weren't living in debt we wouldn't be facing massive tax increases and cutbacks in government spending which will affect everyone. Hold onto your seats folks, people that perceive things with your type of foresight are in for a big wakeup call when the SH*T hits the fan.

The deficit will never be paid back.
USA will go broke.
The rest of the world, in a bad way today, will crumble even further.
Then bring it on....
A One World monetary system . . . . everyone has the same money . . . . . basically what our President and many others feel will even the playing field.
So,
If you and I are really, really lucky . . . we might get 25-cents on every dollar we've saved . . . .
That'll leave us plenty to spend on govenment controlled health care . . . . or, the Gustapo IRS will come calling if you don't purchase . . . .

It's over my friends . . . . Rome fell and unfortunately, this great country will go down as well....

Actually, the deficit has gone down since Obama took office. The debt and deficit are two different things.

We've always had debt. In 1981 we had less than a trillion in debt. In 1990, we had over $3.2 trillion. In 2000 we had $5.6 trillion in debt. In 2008, we had over $10 trillion. Voters don't care.

Even with adjustments for inflation, would you care to guess which U.S. President has presided over the four biggest deficit spending years since 1940, and is projected to also preside over the fifth largest defic spending year in 2013?

11/19/2012 12:10 PM
You're completely missing the point.

Swamp asked how could it be that the President was re-elected and that Congress essentially stayed the same with "everything that's going on."

Part of his "everything that's going on," was the debt/deficit.

My point is that the voters don't care about the debt and the deficit. Which is backed up by the results of this election and just about every election we've had for the last 40 years. The economy causes change, not the growing debt or a spending deficit.
11/19/2012 12:14 PM
Our elected officials should care.   They don't because it won't get them votes but they should.
