Obama in 2008 - "If I don't cut the defecit in half I'll be a one-term president."  Oops.
Maybe the voters realized that the deficit isn't the problem.

Or maybe I'm giving the voters too much credit.

It's the latter.

Either way, the deficit isn't the problem.

Not THE problem, but one of many failures.

Not with the economy, but for anyone under 40 it could turn into one hell of a big problem at some point in your lifetime...

Sure, it's an issue we need to deal with long term, but economic recovery is more important (and will help with the deficit). Reducing the deficit right now will slow the economy down.

To pretend the deficit isn't a problem is to have one's head in the sand.   Nonetheless, it doesn't have to take priority but it can't be ignored either.

Even so, I like people who say what they'll do to actually do what they say.

It's a long term problem that is only solved right now by causing the economy to slow more (cutting spending or raising taxes). I'd prefer that Obama worry about economic growth first and the deficit at a distant second (regardless of what he said while campaigning).

Cutting spending isn't going to slow the economy if the proper programs are cut.   The govt can't spend our way out of this.

Boehner said today that Obama would only get Repub support by cutting spending.

It does though. We've seen it over and over again. That money is going somewhere and being spent by someone. Even if it is wasteful and inefficient, it's still contributing the economy. Long term, the cut is probably smart, but short term, the cut is ill-advised.

Shocking.

If you intend to "reach across the aisle", it would be wise to listen to what they're saying.   Tax and spend isn't going to work.

I'm not arguing for tax and spend. I'm arguing that both congress and the president should put economic growth ahead of deficit reduction.

Do you disagree?

11/7/2012 4:23 PM
You seem to be arguing that government spending is the way out of our economic quagmire.

If that's correct, yes, I disagree.
