CVAC - Heartland Challenge 6 - Season #52. Topic

Oklahoma Panhandle (2-2) at St Andrews (2-2) -2:  Veteran coach jaledarrett takes OkPan on the road to visit yaklyn68 and St Andrews Presbyterian.  The Pan is led by the inside-outside combination of PG Joseph Green (12.3 ppg) and C Randy Robinson (12.8 ppg).  Jaledarrett has won his last two games, with the two losses coming against a pair of undefeated squads.

Yaklyn68's flex attack is led by guards Christopher Heppner (11.8 ppg) and Charles Pauls (10.5 ppg), but the rest of the attack is fairly balanced with 3 other players averaging 8 ppg.  St Andrews' games have been decided by 2, 5, 6, and 4 points in route to a .500 record.

This one should be interesting.  How will St Andrews press/zone handle the scoring of Green & Robinson?  Can they find holes in OkPan's man-to-man?

Vegas agrees this will be a close one, liking the home team by a bucket.

St Andrews 78, Oklahoma Panhandle 55:  Oklahoma Panhandle led for a brief period in the 1st half, but St Andrews eventually cruised in this one.  Oklahoma Panhandle's man-to-man gave up 51% shooting (and 5 of 10 from three) while only shootign 37% themselves.  OkPan's big two combined for a respectable 7-15 from the floor, but the rest of the rest managed 13 of 39 (33%).

On the St Andrews side of the ledger, Heppner & Pauls combined for 28, but SF Dale Faulk and C Robert Hardy combined for 25 of their own.

CVAC moves to 2-0.

(I'm relocating for a job the next couple of days.  My previews/recaps will be short.)

Mount Olive (4-1) -10 at Lincoln (2-3):  wvufan76 brings Mount Olive to Jeff City MO to battle detfrecat and Lincoln.  Mount Olive's balanced attack is led by Sr PG Robert Dawkins' 11.8 ppg, while Delbert Leedy and Michael O'Connor chip in 10+ ppg each.  Lincoln's 3 losses are all to undefeated teams and they are led by Sr SG Eric Brown and his 10.4 ppg.

N Alabama (1-4) at #18 Queens U (NC) (5-0) - 20:  This one appears to be a mismatch as ragizzy faces a tough task, taking his young N Alabama into queens.  N Alabama appears snake bit, with a pair of one point losses and an OT loss so far during this young season.  Queens has done nothing but roll opponents on their way to a 5-0 start.

Mount Olive 81, Lincoln 74:  Mount Olive kept Lincoln at arms length for most of the game (despite shooting 36%) and held on for a 7 point win.  SF David Cole led Mount Olive's balanced attack with a double-double, chalking up 11 & 11.  Lincoln committed 32 fouls, fouling out 4 different players in the loss.

Queens 67, N Alabama 57:  Queens took control early in the 2nd half and ground out a 10 point win.  N Alabama's Duane Alcott scored a game-high 20 but didn't have any help.  Four Queens players scored in double-digits, led by Irving Bullard's 17.

CVAC 4, Heartland just watching.

#11 Coker (5-1) -2 at Drury (6-0): warshot takes ranked Coker to play bentlie29's undefeated Drury team. Coker has Donald Harris (12.7 ppg), Lee Kelley (11.5 ppg), and Justin Ferguson ((10.8 ppg). Drury is led by David Holmes (15.3 ppg).

St Edwards (4-2) at #12 Lees-McRae (5-1) -4: Funngun10 relies on dynamic scorer Clifford Nebel (22.0 ppg) for St Eddies. Dennyj leans on Ron Griffin (11.0 ppg).

I'll cover these - as Dave seems to be busy.

Coker 71 Drury 50 - Drury hung tight with Coker for a half, as Coker hung to a slim 29-26 lead at the half.  Coker then figured out that drury refused to attempt a 3-pointer, and blew them out in the second half, behind SF Lee Kelly's excellent shooting and 14 second half  points. Drury was outrebounded, and really struggled to make freethrows, which led to their demise. Drury's starting center Gualke fouled out in 10 minutes, which added to their misery.  PF David Holmes had a decent game for Drury with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

St Edwards 49, Lees-McRae 46 - In a nasty, slow matchup, both teams played excellent defense (or horrific offense, depending on how you look at it). In a gritty, hard fought win, the St Eds' hilltopers (bbunch's wife's alma mater) stayed in a small lead for the entire 2nd half. Whenever Lees-McRae cut into the lead, either Nelson or Nebel would hit a 3 to keep the lead safe.

2 more wins for CVAC, up 7 to 1.... Barton and Erskine both victorious last night.  Very effective offense seemed to be the difference in 2 farily close games.

Erskine vs. Valdosta St (Erskine shoots 56%)

Barton vs. Montevallo (Barton shoots 54%)

A weird week 9 off-week, and then 3 games on Week 10.

The CVAC has already clinched the title, but maybe the Heartland can make the final score more respectable.

Thanks for picking it up bbunch and Brian x. I can pick it back up for the last round of games. Weirdest. Job. Ever.

I'll have recaps of tonight's games in the morning. On plane now, no time for preview. Congrats to the CVAC on another dominant Challenge.

St Mary's (TX) 74, Limestone 61:  Heartland teams entered last night's action stunned, but mduncanhogs was able to get regain a little bit of respect with a 13 point win over brianxavier's Limestone team.

Limestone entered last night's game with a 4-5 record, but this team is better than their record.  They own the 9th hardest SOS and 2 of their 4 wins are over likely NT single-digit seeds Eckerd and St Edwards.  St Mary's (TX) always brings it, although their previous 6 wins were against a fairly soft schedule.  Their 3 losses are to powerhouse programs Longwood, Seattle, and U of Indy.

St Mary's never trailed in this one and cruised to good win, despite foul trouble for starting PG Shawn Nolan.  As usual Terry Coombs led St Marys with 19 and Lonnie Cook came off the bench to contribute 11  points in 12 minutes.  Going 24 of 25 from the line as a team didn't hurt either.

Limestone was icy from the field, shooting at a 39% clip.  William Pratt had 17 while Eric Avery messed around and got a double-double with 13 & 12.

Longwood 73, W Alabama 61:  #1 Longwood proved worthy of their ranking with a 12 point win over a tough W Alabama team.

Bbunch's team has the sickiest D-II backcourt ever with their lone defeat against highly ranked Seattle.  In fact, we can declare Longwood Heartland conference champ, with non-con victories over St Mary's (TX), W Alabama, Incarnate Word, and Lincoln.  If they keep playing like this, they will win the tough CVAC and have to be favorites for the NT.  Brian_bowen's W Alabama team had done a nice job collecting non-conference wins, but hadn't seen anyone even close to the caliber of Longwood.

W Alabama slowed it down and actually led for much of the first half.  Longwood turned it on at the 10:00 mark and steadily ground away, crusing to a double-digit win.  The backcourt of Davis and Schwizer combined for 32, going 9-of-9 from the charity stripe.  Undersized front-courter Steve Wert put in 11, but snatched 16 boards.  Robert Hixson led W Alabama with 20, but on 6-of-19 shooting.  Like many of Longwood's opponents, W Alabama struggled to put the ball in the basket, shooting 39%.  Teams are managing 41% from the floor against Longwood.

Belmont Abbey 73, Incarnate Word 72:  Belmont Abbey's Ian Austin make's a FT with 4 seconds left to eeke out a one point win versus Incarnate Word. This matcup featured two teams going in opposite directions. Crashdive has been getting the most out of his team, with BA yet to take a loss this season.  IW had 4 wins entered the game, one quality win against Hillsdale and 3 wins against opponents that had gone a combined 2-28.

Neither team shot well in this one, with both squads at a shade over 41%.  Incarnate Word had a 41-36 advantage on the boards, but BA made ten more free throws.  SF Johnny Ryan led BA with 19, while Lowell Harris scored a game-high 23 in IW's losing effort.

The CVAC dominates the Challenge, 9-2.  Congrats to all the CVAC teams, you are the class of the D-II Iba this season.
