I never inform redshirt, and I've been able to successfully redshirt my top RS candidate 23 out of the last 25 times I tried. 21/22 for freshman, 2/3 for non-freshman.

I inform of a RS when:

1. I am sure I can land a recruit.
2. I am sure I want that player to RS.

I almost always only do it for guys with high high potential in LP and/or PER  or players I think will be PGs.
