Also, strikeout means less chance of an error by the defense. Errors were not figured into either A) or B).

I would assume that errors are factored in after the engine determines that a ball has been put in play.

There's a TON of evidence that this is correct.

How do we know that the sim doesn't look at the batter and pitcher ratings and determines where the ball is hit, then looks at the nearest fielders to see who gets there and makes/doesn't make a play based on their fielding ratings (also looking at the speed and base running of the hitter)?

I'm pretty sure WIS published the decision tree on this a while back. Maybe the post was dropped when they switched to this forum system?

Scattered about the forums.  Pulling out a couple of quick examples:

1) When they ended the steroid era-- when they reduced the number of HRs in the game-- the number of fewer HRs was accompanied by exactly that number of increased singles, suggesting the single/HR decision is after the hit/out decision, and not that balls are hit to an area (because then there would have been an increase in flyouts with the decrease in HR).
2) See the other active thread I'm involved in; players with a lot of infield hits have the same avg as players with similar contact/splits but no infield hits.  Suggests that the play is determined to be a single and then an infield single is "flavor," as opposed to a dribbler that is a single or an out based on the runner's speed.

I'll try to remember to add others as  I remember them.

Thanks.  And if speed doesn't contribute to hits overall, I learned something else today.
