firesalt, great list. You are right about both Bill Murray films. And both Jane Austen books made into films. I might give Casablanca the edge over the Godfather just on the importance of the subject matter, but it's close. I agree about Life of Brian and so does my wife who included it on her list.
I have tried to like Hunt for Red October - great cast, but in the end nothing really happens.
I like "Josey Wales", "Liberty Valance", "Stagecoach" and "The Searchers" more than "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" good as it is. Partly, the spaghetti westerns always disappoint me because I have seen the Japanese originals that Leone based his on.
If you like Gregory Peck and have not seen him cook as Ahab in Moby Dick check it out: "The White Whale tasks me Mr. Starbuck, he HEAPS me. But he too is but a mask. What I chiefly hate is the thing behind the mask..." credit not only to Melville but to Ray Bradbury who wrote the screenplay.
I am watching "Saving Private Ryan" as i write this.
