I got Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Damaso Gandarillas at 31.   I don't think the bottom of the draft is as bad as people make it out to be.    Of course, DG is an exception and I assume his health scared people off.   Of course, because of his low overall, he'll never cost me near what a guy like him as a IFA will.
Playing Status: 15-Day DL

Like I said, you will get good role players. He fills one niche, the power hitting DH. He will sturggle to get to 500 AB and will probably make a trip to the DL every other year. Not sure if you are in the AL or NL, but either way you will need to find someone else who can contribute about 175-200 AB.  I got Mike 34th overall. Based off his progression he is going to be a RF/1B with hitting ratings of something like 85-65-65-85-55, the problem is his DUR is going to be 55.

So yeah, you can get some very productive players, but they are probably going to have flaws.

This guy was #32 Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Roosevelt Dalrymple He really doesn't have very many flaws... 70ish durability, but that isn't uncommon at all for a C in this game.

EDIT: http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=5330875 Same draft, 10 picks later.  Traded him (probably for far too little, based on his current production) because I already had a pretty studly DH, but he is a pretty good impact bat.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Wascar Figureoa is kind of the point of posting the above.
He is who I ended up with in For Life last season, when I was near the top in IFA money, and I didn't even pass on signing anyone better.  Figureoa showed up REAL late, so I was actually lucky to even get him with my prospect money.
I don't like punting the draft because, even if you completely load up for IFA and have a decent international scouting budget, you could end up out in the cold.
If you have even $12ish mill budgeted to draft scouting (and put a little effort into your draft-board), you will pretty much always get some useful players, and can often get a gem, even with a late pick.

450-550 PA with an OPS .901 in just under 2000 career AB.    I'll take that at 31 all day.

^^^ agree w/ what Mike is saying, if that guy is a role player your team is stacked.

That player is not versatile and I would not want to build my team around him. He is a supporting player, and a great niche player, but he is not the foundation.

YOU WILL NOT FIND THE FOUNDATION FOR YOUR FRANCHISE OUTSIDE OF THE TOP HALF OF THE DRAFT.

You will find good players, players who support winning teams, players who produce, YOU WILL NOT FIND THE FOUNDATION FOR YOUR FRANCHISE OUTSIDE OF THE TOP HALF OF THE DRAFT. If you do, you are probably in a tard world.

I won a WS and he was the keystone of my offense.   Every player DOES NOT have to be a SS you can OPS .950.   It's that sort of belief that leads to tanking.  I GOTTA  HAVE NINE TOP 5 DRAFT PICKS AND ELEVEN 30M IFA TO WIN!!!!!

I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!

Thanks guys for the different inputs!  The forum has been a great help for myself and I am sure many other managers that are new to the whole HBD experience.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Cam Washington  #20

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Harry Torcato  #29

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Hulk Martin  #37

Took those three a couple seasons ago.  They're now 20, and probably could play in the majors right now (maybe not Torcato).  At the end of the day, that is 30% of the PAs I need, and it's going to be quality.  It also cost under $5M in signing bonuses.

In the year you won it all, you had 6 guys hit 20 or more HR (another 2 finished with 19). You had 6 guys drive in 70 or more (another guy had 69). You had 6 guys score 70 or more runs. Your team BA was .273. You had a balanced lineup, and Gandarillas was one of your better hitters in that balanced lineup.

You say keystone like he was the McGwire of the 1999 Cards. He was not a stoundout performer, he was one of the many contributors to a solid offense.

You are right, every player does not have to be a SS with an OPS of .950, which is why I dont tank, and look for supporting casts like Gandarillas and some of the other guys mentioned when drafting 24-32.

I know you are not quoting me with the last caps lock, but I will state my opinion on what you need to win:

1 stud SP, 1 franchise hitter (an every day C/SS/3B/CF that plays good defense and smashes), 1 quality RP (someone who can go out and get you 80-100 ip of 2ish era). and 22 guys who can contribute something to the BL level. I choose to go after impact players in the IFA, knowing full well that the guys I am getting at 24-32 will not be the face of my franchise. I expect them to contribute, on good years they will make AS teams, but they will never be the face of my franchise.

My team RC27 was 5.22.   It's pretty obvious, to me, that Gandarillas and Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Carson Bottalico were the driving forces of my offense.

Good for you.

A RF who can mash it part time.
An OK CF defensivley who has some speed but will only be OK at the plate.
And a DH who can mash it part time.

Those are exactly who I would expect at that point in the draft. Three quality pieces that a winning team will need. Three guys who I would not expect to be my super star player.
8/29/2013 12:53 PM
You don't need a superstar player.
