It was between Marichal and Norris for me.  Came down to a better simleague track record for Norris.

Marichal being exposed is possibly the most baffling protection decision I've seen since I joined this league, and there have been many.
My wife tells me I baffle her all the time, so you're not alone in your assessment...

Marichal not the first to be exposed to the draft for the first time.  First such to be drafted so far, though.

First time *not* exposed:

Mark McGwire, Athletics
Johnny Damon, Royals
Justin Upton, Diamondbacks

Marichal is the 21st ranked Giant pitcher in this theme. He'll give you a pile of innings but they're average innings.

I hope to retain the other 20.

Hey sgsmith,  I know you keep track of this stuff.  Without mentioning any non-protected players, which team has the most commonly protected same 5 players?  It seems like my Twins' keepers of Santana, Mauer, Carew, Knoblauch & Puckett would be right up there near the top.
Hmmm... I can think of a few ways to quantify this.  Here's one that makes sense to me:

Marlins have been used 10 times in my records.  Their top 5 "K1" players have occupied 47 of 50 possible slots -- 94%.  That's the highest such number.

By that measure, your Twins have the second-highest orthodoxy rating: 58 pf 65 slots (89.2%).

The next few:

3t. Phillies 86.3% (though they have nobody who has been protected each of the 16 times they've been used!)
3t. Indians 86.3%
5. Giants 85.3%
6. Athletics 85.0%
7. Astros 82.5%

Now THAT would be an interesting roster;-)

These team's have the least consensus on their First Five:

30. Pirates 57.8%
29. Angels 60.0%
27t. Blue Jays 65.3%
27t. Dodgers 65.3%
26. Rays 68.0%
25. Brewers 69.2%
24. Yankees 70.7%
23. Cardinals 71.3%

That's among only 5 uses for the Rays, and only 9 uses for Angels and Pirates.

Angels join Phillies among teams that have no player protected every time; the others are Tigers and Orioles. Angels are unique in that they have no player who has been protected all but one time.

I'll let alleyviper post his stats, but I recall him doing fairly well for me last leg.  I've used this Marichal in other leagues and he always does fairly well for me.

Thanks sgsmith.  I figured the Twins had to be up there.  They just don't have a large number of protectable players.  And the ones they have are overwhelming obvious.

The following each have three players protected every time:

White Sox (4 uses)
Diamondbacks (7)
Rockies (9)
Marlins (10)
Indians (16)
Mariners (16)

There is great consensus in the Top 4 for Braves (93.8%) and Diamondbacks (92.9%) but their 5th keepers are all over the map.
