Anybody notice worse than usual grades in Iba at Mid-Terms?  Opened the e-mail and I've never seen so much yellow.

I noticed I had one freshman who had a 2.6 HS GPA hit just 2.4 with 10 minutes of study hall, so I bumped up his study hall time, but I didn't think much of it.

I have 0 yellows in Phelan and Tark, which both came out this morning.

I had two freshmen (7 SH minutes with 2.8 HS GPA and 10 SH minutes with 2.3 HS GPA) and a sophomore in the yellow. I don't think I've ever had that many folks in the yellow before either. Especially not a sophomore. I very commonly have 0 SH minutes for sophomores who did fine as freshmen. Not in this case, but they're usually not in danger.

Me too.  No yellows.

This is me too. Many sophs who did fine as frosh now in the yellow. I haven't done anything different this year than any other season, and I had literally half of my team in the yellow.

subtract HS GPA from 4.0 and thats how many mins you should give to freshmen to not only keep them out of the yellow but get them to a point where you should have to give very few if any mins for the rest of their career.  For Sophs subtract college GPA from 3.6, Jrs from 3.2, Srs from 2.8.  Nobody will ever go ineligible again.

I don't get it. If the have a 3.6 HS GPA I give them .4 minutes or 4 minutes? A 3.0 get 1 minute or 10?

I suspect some tongue in cheek, but yes, multiple the result by 10 and that is the number of minutes. This is an extremely conservative formula, but I feel 99.99% certain using it will prevent all ineligibles...

That seems like a huge waste of minutes for most kids.

But I think this shows the problem with SH minutes, while all other improvement is predictable, grades have a level of randomness.

it's not a waste of minutes at all. I'm usually giving almost everyone 0 minutes by the start of their second season, and everyone with any kind of decent work ethic is still getting maxed out in their skills well before they finish their career.

If it were possible to have identical players, and I'm giving them 10 SH and you're giving them 7, is that 1 extra minute of practice in 3 separate skills really making that big of a difference in their on-court ability?  Especially over the long haul if you're having to give them SH down the road and I'm not?

I have plenty of guys that it would make sense to give 0 minutes at the start of their second season and this season when I did they showed up in the yellow. That's the problem with grades, is there is a random element that doesn't make sense

Just give any player that has a yellow line at midterms 5 minutes of study hall for the rest of the semester.  That will automatically keep him eligible.

That's not even close to being true

I know a guy with 125 seasons experience that proves otherwise.
