How did this team fail? (Not win 50+ games) Topic

One of the best teams I've seen in the sim in terms of what many of us have targeted. Team is from most recent dh$52 league, went 42-40 and missed the playoffs on a tie-breaker. I have some ideas but also want to hear what other think.

The team had the following weighted averages for the actual minutes used:
D 76.58
orb% 40.21
dreb% 101.11
ast% 95.73

Note: 42-40 is not a "failure" per se since this is a difficult balanced league, but with advanced stats so high one would have expected this team to win 50-60 games.

felonius, others hear you *****, but how can they deny that a team with 40+ orb%, 100%+ dreb%, an ave D over 76 and an insane ast% of 95.73 should win 50-60 games?
5/11/2013 5:42 PM
well first off...i dont think it was a failure...half the league was basically a fringe playoff team....there just inst enough doormats in the league anymore...hell we even lost jethro this season...and sixernuggets went from worst to first....its a tough league

i think they were average because of the offense....especially from the ft line...he was dead last in ftm...thats why i dont like pippen or garnett being my lead dogs....and i think if youre gonna go for an ast% heavy team, up-tempo is the way to go

5/11/2013 5:44 PM
im still surprised they didnt shoot a little higher though....we might have to bring in oliver stone to do a movie about felonius and wis

I spent 7-8 hours the last few days pouring over the stats from the last dh$52 trying to see what screwed you felonius. I have concluded:
(1) Either WIS really has flagged your account or there is a lot more randomness than we would like to believe
(2) Your foul rate (RL pf/g divided by mpg, with a weight for minutes used applied) has very high compared to the other teams in the league and you draw foul rate (rl fta's, divided by minutes, dived by 1.28 with the weight applied) was very low when compared to others. The sim net was apparent as your opponents attempted 348 more FTA's, also with your FT% being lower than ave your team had 405 fewer FTM's than opponents.
(3) Your RL poss/min and fga/min rates were also very low. Will talk about this more in next post.

Editing 1st post to reflect this: when I say "fail" I don't mean bottom feeder or horrible team, I mean that when I see these types of %'s from the advanced stats and D I expect to see 50-60 wins. I know it is a tough balanced league, but one would expect a team that meets all expected levels for boards and D should really see something good by adding an ast% of 95.73%.

did both h/h and u/h for stretches, neither really changed much about much except turnovers

The other thing I noticed that has impacted how I'm constructing my current team:

Sim results
League wide FGA ave was 93.8/g
League wide Poss ave was 122.6/g
This team had sim results of fga 91.8/g and poss of 120.7.

Here is the potential issue the weighted ave of RL for this team was 86.73 and 116.33. (Calculated by taking the weighted ave of poss/m and fga/m for all players and applied weight based on minutes used in the sim).

If I have a full grasp on the WIS faq for the indiv penalty then the fact that this team had a RL fga of 86.7 but attempted nearly 92 shots a game means that virtually every game one or more players hit the penalty.

So, perhaps this team hit the indiv penalty for multiple players each game and this offset any advantage gained from the added ast%.

ohhh ok...i just clicked on a few random games to see what you were running and they all were hc

you got pippen again and duncan is a good passing big....going for a 2nd try?

5/11/2013 6:14 PM
probably not - Duncan is about 5% more efficient than Garnett and Scottie was just best available
5/11/2013 8:07 PM (edited)
one of the things that surprised me about this team was the fact that  high steal %s appeared to mean absolutely bupkis to opp turnnovers
