Loras 83 - Norwich 74
Dominican 64 - Methodist 75
Texas Tyler 52 - Puget Sound 74

Loras/Norwich
In a game that featured 67 free throw attempts and 55 fouls, Loras pulls out a 9 point win. Leading scorer Mark Waters scored 26 and pulled down 8 boards in only 21 mins (because of fouls, son!). A back and forth first half saw Loras to a 1 point cushion at the break. The game remained tight for the first 10 minutes of the second half, with both teams trading buckets and the lead. From 9:51-7:36, however, Loras grabbed control with a 10-2 run led by John Mack's 6 to turn a 55-53 advantage to 65-55. This run proved decisive as the game played out evenly from then on and Loras won by 9.

Methodist/Dominican
SG Floyd McNayr poured in 6 three point shots on a game-high 27 pt performance. The game played tight for the first half, Methodist reaching the break up by 2 at 35-33. It's obvious artie's halftime speech was not as rousing as zwatts, however, as Methodist came out gangbusters with a 9-0 run in the first 2:13 lead by Ladd and McNayr. Dominican rallied to pull the game back to within one possession, and Methodist answered with another run lead by Ladd and McNayr...this time for 12 consecutive points to build a 15 point lead. Not even an 11 point run by Dominican could get the game back within striking distance, and Methodist coasts to a 75-64 win.

Texas, Tyler/Puget Sound
Puget Sound's suffocating defense held Texas Tyler 26 points below their season average coming into the contest in a strong 74-52 win on their home court. The contest started slowly. With both teams playing strong defense and rebounding well, only 23 points were scored in the first half of the first half which featured a Thibodeau-loving 3 and a half minute run where no points were scored! It was a 2 possession game at the half. Texas Tyler closed the lead to 1 in the opening 1:49 of the second half, but 3 consecutive 3-pointers by John Kott and Anthony Jurgenson opened the gap to 10. A further 10-2 run from 12:09-7:13 gave Puget a 17 point cushion and they would cruise the rest of the way.

Great first day of competition. I can see it's going to be hard to get wins in this tourney...so, it's good I'm on the bye. See you tomorrow.

Day 2 Results:
Norwich 54 @ Methodist 90
Texas Tyler 77 @ Loras 80
Puget Sound 78 @ Texas Lutheran 80 (ot)

Norwich/Methodist
Methodist used an high octane offense and stifling defense to open up a 29 point half time lead. Led by a balanced scoring effort which included four players scoring 12 or more points, the men from Methodist cruised to a 90-54 win.

Texas Tyler/Loras
Loras, behind twin 19 point efforts by leading scorers Mark Waters and Ryan Smith combined w/ a solid advantage in Ft Attempts was able to turn a 3 point halftime deficit to a 3 point win. A 20-2 run by Loras from 17:58-13:10 after Tx Tyler had expanded it's halftime lead to eight turned out to be the deciding stretch.

Puget Sound/Texas Lutheran
In what has to be the game of the tournament thus far, Tx Lutheran outlasted Puget Sound 80-78 in OT. SF Glenn Young's 14 points in the 2nd half and OT was the spark the Lutherans would need to counter the five Sounders who scored in double digits. The game saw Puget Sound in prime position to take home the win, up by eleven with 5:50 remaining. Lutheran turned up the pressure and answered with an 18-6 run of their own to gain a 1 pt lead with 23 seconds remaining. Guard Kurt Woodward was fouled with 11 seconds left and put on the line w/ a chance to win but missed his first FTA of the day in going 1-2 to tie, and forcing OT. He literally kicked himself after the loss.

Day 3
Dominican 56 @ Norwich 58
Texas Tyler 56 @ Texas Lutheran 70
Methodist 74 @ Puget Sound 78

Dominican/Norwich
Norwich sunk 22 of 26 FTA, and 9 of 10 in the second half to end Dominican's efforts and seal a victory. Trailing at the half, Dominican was able to pull out to a 6 point lead at two points during the second half but could not hold the advantage against the Norwich squad.

Texas Tyler/Texas Lutheran
Tx Lutheran, on the strength of a 17 point advantage in first half play, was able to ride a strong defensive effort to the 4 point victory. Leading scorer C Steven Gravel had 15 as the only Lutheran in double figures on their balanced offensive day.

Methodist/Puget Sound
Floyd McNayr's 17 second half points were not enough to claw Methodist back from a 7 point halftime deficit in this 4 point defeat. The Sounders were led by another balanced effort with triplets (John Kott, Kurt Woodward and Garry Bullins) scoring 15. The Sounders were 13 of 14 in the second half from the charity stripe, and 10-10 in the last minute foul time after Methodist had fought hard to close the game to 2.
2/10/2014 12:19 PM
Day 4
Dominican 60 @ Texas Tyler 62
Methodist 66 @ Texas Lutheran 74
Puget Sound 93 @ Loras 69

Dominican/Texas Tyler
It was a tale of two halves as Dominican took a 14 point lead into the break, only to lose the second half by 16 and the game by 2. Texas Tyler PF Michael Bustamante scored all 10 of his points in the decisive half and leading scorer SF Ross Anderson put in 9 of his game high 14 in the second half, as well.

Methodist/Texas Lutheran
Tournament leading scorer Floyd McNayr filled up the bucket for his customary 21 oints, but it was not enough to counter the Lutheran's balanced effort with four scoring double digits. The 8 point difference is easily the result of the FTA differential, as the Lutherans got to the line 17 more times than the Methodists!

Puget Sound/Loras
In a battle of top-5 teams, PG Ryan Smith was the only Loras player in double digits, pouring in an impressive 24 in their attempt to take down #1 Puget Sound. The Sounders had all 12 members of the roster score, with 5 in double figures, in pulling out the impressive 24 point win and dropping Loras from the ranks of the unbeaten.
2/11/2014 12:50 PM
Day 5
Methodist 67 @ Texas, Tyler 54
Loras 48 @ Dominican 65
Texas Lutheran 68 @ Norwich 45

Methodist/Texas Tyler
Methodist's SG Floyd Mcnayr continued his strong tournament in once again pacing the Methodist attack in a 15 point effort. Texas, Tyler used a balanced attack to keep the game within striking distance throughout, but in the end Methodist's strong defense, late FT proficiency and some dagger threes by Frank Cline and Floyd McNayr proved to be enough for the 67-54 triumph.

Loras/Dominican
Dominican utilized a balanced attack, with seven players scoring seven or more, and solid defense to overcome Loras in this sloppy battle which also forced spectators to witness 40 turnovers. Long droughts of bad offensive play plagued both teams simultaneously through the first half as the first 3 minutes of the first half saw 3 total points scored, and the last 2 minutes of the half saw nothing go through the hoop for either side. Loras came out strong in the second half, shaving seven points off Dominican's halftime advantage in the first 8:15. However, a 5+ minute scoring drought in crunch time decided the contest.

Texas Lutheran/Norwich
Backup C Kim Lane's 11 pt 13 reb (6 offensive!) performance earned him Player of the game Honors and a ridiculously high PER rating (I think) in the Lutheran's 23 point win over Norwich. Norwich was never able to establish an offensive rhythm against Tx Lutheran's stifling man to man and were held to 40% shooting with 18 turnovers.
2/12/2014 10:47 AM
Day 6
Norwich 52 @ Puget Sound 72
Texas Lutheran 58 @ Dominican 46
Loras 69 @ Methodist 86

Norwich/Puget Sound
The Sounders held Norwich to 36% shooting in this solid twenty point victory. Leading scorer John Kott put up 11 three point attempts and thirteen total attempts to score his 13. Player of the Game Garry Bullins posted a double-double in his 12 pt, 10 rebound effort, while also blocking five shots.

Loras/Methodist
In a sloppy game featuring fifty turnovers, Methodist's strong rebounding advantage (48 to 34 overall, 21-8 advantage on the offensive glass) allowed them to put up fourteen more shots than Loras to overcome a .386% shooting night en route to a 17-point win. Once again, the key scorer for the Methodists was Floyd McNayr, who looked to cement his place on the All Tournament team with his fourth game of twenty or more points of the tournament.

Texas Lutheran/Dominican
Texas Lutheran played solidly throughout in holding Dominican to a 39% shooting night in claiming the 12 point victory. Leading scorer Larry McPeak poured in 16 points from his PG position on 17 shots, including 12 3 pt att. The Lutherans also dominated the glass, leading to an 11 shot advantage in the otherwise closely fought contest.
2/14/2014 4:06 PM
Day 7
Norwich 49 @ Texas Tyler 72
Texas Lutheran 86 @ Loras 73
Puget Sound 79 @ Dominican 62

Norwich/Texas Tyler
Paced by SF Ross Anderson and SG Jon Hill's 19 and 16 pts, Texas Tyler was able to break open a tight game at halftime to pull away for a 23 point win. Turnovers were the important factor in the Texas Tyler win, as they forced ten more than they committed, leading to a 9 shot advantage (as well as a 12 FTA advantage). Long scoring droughts in the second half doomed Norwich, as Texas Tyler clamped down to get the victory.

Texas Lutheran/Loras
SF Glenn Young's 13 points paced a balanced Lutheran attack which featured five players in double figures in their 13 point victory over Loras. A tight first half was followed by some strong play by Loras to open the second, as they outscored the Lutherans by 10 in the first 5:30 minutes of the second half to open a six point advantage at 54-48. From then on, it was all Tx Lutheran, however, as they answered with a 9-0 run from 14:30-12:35, and went on to outscore Loras by ten over the remainder of the contest. Loras was led by John Mack's 19 points in the losing effort.

Puget Sound/ Dominican
Led by Player of the Game Garry Bullin's 17 point, 6 rebound effort, the Sounders were able to ride a strong first half and stifling defense to an easy victory. Dominican could not convert advantages in FG Att, FT Att and ORB to the win because they were held to a .386% shooting night by the stifling M2M defense. The Sounders, however, were quite successful in all aspects of their shooting, making more FG's and FT's, both in less attempts. Dominican was led by Russell Davies 13 in the losing effort.

2/14/2014 5:42 PM
Thanks for doing all of the dirty work to set up the tournament and give daily recaps Artie. This years tournament was especially exciting for me as I started 2-0 and thought I might finally have a legitimate chance to win it. But Puget Sound, Dominican, Methodist and Texas Lutheran all had something to say about that giving me a major reality check on my expectations for Loras. Hope to see all of you in the national tournament this season.

Here's how the teams from this season's Artie Classic stack up against the rest of DIII going into the National Tournament.

Five of the seven teams who participated in the invitational went on to win their conference tournament to net a total of six teams going to the big dance. Dominican and Norwich both lost their conference tournament final which would prevent Norwich from obtaining their 6th consecutive NT berth. The other 5 teams all won their respective conferences to earn their ticket to the field of 64, however, each team had such a solid post-season resume that being crowned the CT champion wasn't necessary to punch their ticket to the NT. The Artie Classic participants managed to snag a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 seed, all of which can potentially make deep runs into the tournament. Here's a look at the individual teams:

#6 Texas Lutheran 27-2 (6-0 in the Artie Classic, hereby dubbed "AC")
#2 seed West
Texas Lutheran had a stellar regular season winning going undefeated in the AC, with only one surprising loss to Schneider and losing one other game to Dickinson who also managed to secure a #2 seed. They are a legitimate contender in the West and will certainly be hoping to break the Final Four. This is Texas Lutheran's 34th consecutive NT appearance under the leadership of windixies.

#2 Puget Sound 28-1 (5-1 in the AC)
#1 seed South
Puget Sound enters the NT as one of the favorites having their only loss coming in the AC. Puget Sound sitting at the #1 seed in the South puts the expectation of a Final Four appearance on the team and they're sure to be disappointed if they don't reach that benchmark. Being only the 2nd consecutive tournament appearance for bbscottsdale, Puget Sound will definitely be looking to capitalize on this season's success with a strong recruiting class for next season.

#11 Methodist 26-3 (4-2 in the AC)
#4 seed East
Methodist had a perfect season outside of the AC and their OT loss to Dickinson. They have the potential to make a deep run as they have the momentum of a 23 game win streak behind them and have shown that they are very competitive with other top tier teams. Zwatts82 will be making his 14th consecutive NT appearance with Methodist hoping to capture a 2nd National Championship with the team.

#12 Loras 24-5 (2-4 in the AC)
#3 seed Midwest
Loras has yet to show that they can hang with the top level DIII teams as they finished with a losing record in this season's AC. With a first round match-up vs the former AC participant Westfield St., Loras hopes to show that they are in fact able to compete at a high level. This marks bisoneer's 11th consecutive NT bid where he has yet to make the Sweet 16.

Texas, Tyler 23-6 (2-4 in the AC)
#5 seed in the West
Texas, Tyler enters the NT looking to have a progressively uphill battle the further they advance into the tournament as they are only 2-4 against ranked opponents. They hope to ride the momentum from their 13 game win streak including 2 wins against division rival California, Santa Cruz to make a run through the playoffs.  Coachucla hopes to make his 7th consecutive NT appearance a longer trip than last season when Texas, Tyler were one and done.

Dominican 21-8 (1-5 in the AC)
#8 seed in the South
Dominican makes a NT berth after starting the season with a 2-8 record against one of the toughest DIII non-conference schedules. A first round win for Dominican over Dallas will likely give us a Dominican vs #2 Puget Sound rematch which Puget Sound won by 17 when the teams met earlier this season. This will be Artie40's 9th consecutive NT appearance

Awesome preview, Bisoneer. I wanted to Congratulate Texas, Tyler on a great tournament run. Dickinson is looking to go back to back, but if UTT can pull it off it will have knocked off the #3, #6, #4, and #2 RPI team in consecutive games. AC teams fared very well in the NT. Every participant but Dominican advanced and we had 3 Elite 8 participants (Puget, Tx Lutheran and UTT).

Go UTT!

W. Connecticut State is coming off of a Conference Championship, advancing to the 2nd round of the Invitational, and a 25-5 overall record in their first season of the AC. Texas Tyler returns to the AC fresh off of a run to the National Championship game! Their wildly successful campaign concluded with a 28-7 record, a Conference Championship, a Conference Tournament Championship, and five NT victories. They return the starting backcourt from last season's team as well as seven others for a 531 Overall Rating to begin the schedule.

Loras finished last season with a 25-6 record in a season which saw them claim a Conference Championship, a Conference Tournament Championship and a NT victory before falling in the second round. The starting C and PF from last season return as Loras looks to spark up their usual high powered offense in the AC. Seven others return for a 516 Overall Rating entering the season.

Puget Sound comes back to the Classic fresh off of a 31-2 season which saw bbscottsdale claim a National Coach of the Year Award, A Conference Championship, a Conference Tournament Championship and a run to the Elite 8. Eight players from last seasons roster return including four players who started at least 13 game, and eight that started at least two. They'll be bringing a 512 Overall Rating into the schedule.

Methodist concluded season 69 with a stout 27-4 record that included a Conference Championship, a Conference Tournament Championship and a NT win. With nine returning players, including 2nd Team All-American Floyd McNayr, Methodist will again be a threat, as evidenced by their 546 Overall Rating...the highest entering the AC.

Dominican finished last season with a 21-9 record, including a Conference Championship and an At-large birth in the NT. The ten players returning include three starters, and produce a 530 Overall Rating.
