In a way it's kind of discouraging--success in the game essentially comes down to building one number as high as you can. Kinda takes some of the fun out of it, but I guess winning is fun, too.

this is absolutely a false statement.  Very rarely does this strategy (building one number, not the ast% in particular) prove this dominant.  Remember, this is an OPEN league we're talking about, and while I advocate playing in open leagues, what you can sometimes get away with in one is not indicative of everything.
Please explain further. Just talking open leagues here--was this 73-9 season an exception?

Yep if you want to step up your game come to ODL, DH 52, Decades League or any of the progressives.  Plus really anything else in Theme League classifieds

it's irrelevant the position played.

PS - the team got squashed by tadmand in the playoffs.  Crazy ast% is still ringless.

From what I have found, having 4-5 guys who are effective passers, works better than having 1 or 2. Even when the total for the 5 on the floor is similar. A team with 27, 17, 6, 15, 15 (approx ast %s) is averaging 36 ast/game in a competitive league. They're sim shooting stats are far better than in RL, and they will win their division unless tey have an epic meltdown in the last 10 games. That is a total ast % of 80. Not 'extreme'. I have seen and made MANY teams with more  total ast %,  but with less effectiveness.. I conclude bc those ast% are mostly coming from 1 (stockton) or 2 players with may be a decent 3rd guy (maybe not). This actually correlates to RL.  If an NBA team has 4-5 effective passers on the floor, it is one of the best things in the world to watch. But it translates to WIS bc it translates into more open & easy shots. Sure, Stockton or Thomas or Magic will make 1-3 great passes/game that lead to easy buckets, but a lineup of say, Billups, Barry, Bird, K Malone, & Noah will lead to more- bc the ball & the players are constantly moving & every single player has outstanding court vision... and would be a thing of beauty to see in RL. My brother (who I work with & is my roommate) and a few other guys that we work with are on here.. We've only played in the same league once (right now actually) and we have noticed the same thing. One of us will be testing a low efg% (approx 50) with 140%+ ast % team soon. (In the Banned Players league)

In the SSLV5, an 80% ast team just beat a 150% ast team in the finals. The 80% ast team had 4 starters (Stockton, James, Howard, Gilmore) with IRL efg%s over 60 (stockton was actually 59.8). The 150% team had 3 (Stockton, Nash, James).. Just throwing that out there..

It doesn't work like that.  Smokey brought this up long ago, and it was wrong then.  The resulting apg has nothing to do with the reason for mass ast%.  I don't mean to sound short or rude, but this argument has already been had, most likely in this thread.  What you have noticed likely has much more to do with approximately 13 other factors (your 2nd post screams this).  There's no good way to test your hypothesis because it's hard to find a controlled enough environment to do so, and even if you did, the extreme randomness of WIS will make it even harder to get conclusive results.

I never have below 120% for my starters, and I shoot for never below 120% on the court. My players usually have high efg% and high ast% with my bigs hopefully with reasonably nice dreb%. Most of my teams end up leading the league (or coming close) in ppg, fg%, 3pt%, and Assists. So far, I have done a lot of tinkering with it and I am trying to get my turnovers down, while keeping everything else up, as I usually lead the league in turnovers too.

I recently beat Austin in a championship series and he kept complaining that he would have 20 more field goal attempts than me yet I would somehow win by 20. It frustrated the heck out of him, but I was shooting over 60% from both 2 and 3 in that series with a lot of 3's.

Ash, I always appreciate your advice, as your usage thread single handedly turned me from a bad owner to a relatively competitive one. Since then, I have done a lot of researching things on my own and would love to share some of my findings.
I do remember that but kicking. It frustrated me enough to jump to baseball for 4-5 months. I am back now and I agree the assist think works. I tried one assist team and I won a championship with it. Unfortunately I notice that a lot of the assist teams are almost Identical. Stockton-Nash -Magic - Lebron - Tom B. I think Sim needs to make a small adjustment when teams can shoot over 60% from the field. When is the last time they did an update.? Just wondering.

I am in my first basketball league...Should I be keeping my players minutes exactly as recommended? I have lost ten in a row and thought boosting my players minutes by a couple of minutes would help. I guess not?? I am not getting blown away, just can't win the close ones.
Any need to use a press D?

hi, does anyone know if assist% changes with position effectiveness %?

so if a point guard who has an assist% of 20%, were to be played at small forward where he is 80% effective, would his ast% in that situation still be 20% or would it drop down to 16%?

My understanding is that it would drop to 16%

thanks hoopsdude, anyone else think they know?

from the FAQ

#131 Gameplay Q. How does position effectiveness work?
  A. The position effectiveness gives each player a percentage of performance at each position. This percentage is based on statistical analysis of each player's actual stats as well as listed position and height/weight. If a player is less than 100% at a position, he will be penalized in all areas by the specified percentage while playing that position.
