WIS Championship 2013 - Where do You Rank? Topic

Welcome to the 10th Annual WIS Championship

The WIS Championship involves 96 owners, each playing in six leagues (w/ different themes). The top 24 owners advances to round 2, where they played in another 6 leagues. That's over 58,000 games played over the course of six months.

In 2004, ballantine proved that he was the best WIS owner in the world as he averaged 103 wins in round 1 and 93 wins (against the best of the best) in round 2. All 12 of his teams made the playoffs and four of those won the World Series.

In 2005, ronthegenius became #1 player as he averaged 99 wins in round 1 and 93 wins in round 2. Nine of his 12 teams made the playoffs and four of those won the World Series.

In 2006, ArlenWilliam captured the title with a strong round 2 performance, averaging almost 94 wins per team (next best was < 90). He had 9 of 12 teams make the playoffs, including 5 of 6 in the round 2.

In 2007, JohnGPF outlasted 2004 champion ballantine with a dominating round 1 performace (94 wins per team) followed by a solid round 2 effort (88 wins). He saw 9 of his 12 teams make the playoffs.

In 2008, jfranco77 won the closest race (to date) by edging out bigmc by only eight points (898-890). His dominant first round (98 wins per team) gave him the big lead. Overall, he had 7 of 12 teams make the playoffs with two WS titles.

In 2009, wildthings1 won an average of 96 games in each round and he had 10 of 12 teams make the playoffs. His final margin of victory (943-888) was the largest since ballantine in 2004.

In 2010, rbow923 improved on his 5th place finish in 2009, by averaging a consistent 94 wins over rounds 1-2, getting 11 of 12 teams into the playoffs and winning 2 World Series titles. Previous champions wildthings1 (3rd), ballantine (7th) and jfranco77 (9th) all finished in the top 10.

In 2011, brianjw kept rbow923 from being the first 2-time champion, by winning in the closest race ever (992 to 989). Brian's strength was his consistency. He only won one World Series, but he averaged over 95 wins and saw all 12 teams make the playoffs. It's the third time in the 4 years that a first-time entrant has won the Championship.

In 2012, mildnhazy used a strong round 2 playoff performace to prevent brianjw from winning back to back tournaments.  Overall, his 12 teams averaged over 93 wins, 9 made the playoffs (four winning over 100 games), and two won the World Series.

Here are the Top 24 Owners from the past eight tournaments:

Who is the Absolute Best Owner in WIS?

In order to be considered the best, you need to have success over a broad range of different themes. This tournament will absolutely determine who the best WIS owner is. The winner will have had to put together 12 solid teams over a 5-month time period. Serious WIS owners only. Here's how it will work.

* The field is typically limited to 96 owners (although if there is enough demand, we could go higher) . In order to guarantee your spot in this Championship Event, you will need to purchase a $15 GC. See below for instructions on purchasing a GC.

* In round 1, there will be 6 different themes we'll each be involved in. Assuming 96 owners, there wll be four leagues for each of the six themes.  All twenty-four leagues (4 * 6 = 24) will be started at approximately the same time. Points will be awarded based on wins and playoffs success. The standard point formula will be used.  Points = Regular season wins + playoff wins + 5 points for making the playoffs + 5 points for each playoff round won.

* The top 24 owners in cumulative points from round 1 (regardless of which leagues they were in) will advance to round 2.  In round 2, there will be another 6 themes (different from the first six themes). The same points formula will be used in round 2.  Round 1 results will not be completely ignored in the final score. The weighting will be 33% for round 1 and 67% for round 2.... In other words, the cumulative round 1 score will be divided by 2 and added to the round 2 score to determine the Best Owner in WIS.

* The leagues will not be determined randomly, but the divisions within each league will be. Once the 96 owners have purchased the $15 GC, then I will use a complex formula I developed to determine the seedings and the league alignments for round 1. This will essentially distribute the higher-ranking owners into different leagues.

* The formula to rank the owners will be based on overall winning percentage, and championships won. Also, if you participated in any of the previous WIS Championship(s), then how you fared in those will also come into play (more weight given to more recent performances). The more tournaments you play in, the more weight this factor will have in your overall rating.

* In the event that one or more of the top 24 owners from round 1 decide not to enter round 2, then the next best owners(s) from round 1 will advance. In case of ties, the tie-breakers will be (1) regular season wins (2) playoff wins (3) best single team overall point total (4) second best single team overall point total, etc.

* As far as prizes, assuming 96 teams, we'll have $1440 in gift certificates plus admin will be adding $300. That's $1740 worth of GC to distribute. All teams advancing to round 2 will be guaranteed at least $30 in GC. If more or less than 96 owners participate, the prizes will be adjusted accordingly (see below).

Prize Structure (based on 96 teams)

Place Prize Amt
1st $250
2nd $200
3rd $150
4th $120
5th $100
6th $90
7th $80
8th $70
9th $60
10th $50
11th $40
12th $40
13th-24th $30
25th-26th $10

The team with the best regular season record in each of the six round #1 themes will each receive $15 (ties split).

The prize is nice but what we're all really after is the recognition as being the BEST.

* As far as the themes go, different cap levels will be used. Most will center around $80M to $100M with at least one low cap (<80) and one high cap (>=120) included. There will not be any drafts in round 1. There will be at least one but not more than two drafts in round 2.

If you are interested, please post here. I don't expect that we'll start playing any games for at least 6 weeks, as it will take a bit of time to fill the league, create rosters, verify rosters, etc.

** The themes for Round 1 can be found HERE

The first roster deadline (2 rosters completed) will be mid July. All six rosters will be due by the end of July.

The first deadine is Sunday, July 14.
The second deadline is Sunday, July 21.
