Splits vs. Pitches Topic

Quick question- how much can great pitches compensate for poor splits? I have a guy who projects to be 97 control, 45 vL, 51 vR with a 91 Pitch1 and a 93 pitch2.

Will pitches this good compensate for his low vL/vR, or is he a career AAA/AAAA guy at best?

BTW, I am in Pawtuckett, which is 0,0,0,-1,-1

Since he's unlikely to reach projections, he's likely minor league fodder.

I don't think I've ever had pitcher with that sort of ratings but I have had luck with low 50s splits.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Esteban Mercado is the closest I have.   Similar pitches, considerably lesser control and slightly better VR.     He does well enough to warrant a BL spot on my staff.

He might give you a decent season, particularly if he's got outstanding velocity, but I wouldn't think he'll ever be good enough to take beyond the first year of arbitration. I see him as a likely 1.50 WHIP/5.00 ERA type of guy.

If Velocity and GB were both high, I think he'd be useful.

People swear by the 80+ control, velocity and gb and p1 p2 pitchers.

Don't know what your guy will end up looking like, but at his prime:

http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2366805

had 94 control, 49/61 splits, 51 velocity, 79 sink, and pitches of 87/73/67/69

I think that fits the definition of rock solid control, great pitches, terrible splits.

anyhoo, he's racked up 162 starts, 248 games (I used him mostly in long relief with some starts due to injury or spot starts, his next team has used him primarily as a starter) 1139 innings, a .284 OAV, 1.43 WHIP and a 4.84 era.

While those numbers won't push a guy into the all star game, they're not bad at all if he was your 5th starter.

He had a pretty good 2nd half for me this year.

Edit: not good at HTML.  I left the tags in there to show my stupidity.  .... and they wonder why this nation has a skills gap?

Splits are the most important, but the Big Three can make up for that, providing you have the big three.  Velocity, groundball and P1.  If they are at or above 90, splits can become a non factor by and large.
That's really bad advice.

Splits are primary ratings.  Velocity and groundball are secondary ratings.  They can augment the primary ratings (control, splits and pitches), but they can't compensate for poor primary ratings, such as splits.

it also depends on your catcher. if you have a catcher with 85-90 pc, then he'll make up for a lot of what your pitcher is lacking in splits.  but, it won't be real consistent.
This isn't good advice either as it's illogical. All pitchers improve with a high PC catcher. All pitchers suffer without one. A good catcher is an independant asset.

This is significantly worse advice.

This reliever isn't exactly great. And his splits are decent.

Bad advice is taking advice from 78 seasons in and no WS titles.
How are those "true knuckleballers" doing?  Find any yet?
