me too- I'm guessing they all represent about the same amount of salary but some of the sets represent salary better spent than others

They do not represent the same amount of salary. My last team had three clowns worth about $3 million including a guy from the 69/70 Pittsburgh Pipers who had 27.1 usage and shot 36%.

They absolutely, positively do not always represent near the same salary, and that's why they are a crock.  Either do away with the stupid things, or give everybody the same three.

The current crop of rookies trying to submerge my season. Total "value" : $3,562,300. Total minutes: 2134.

    Name Team Pos Salary Per% Mid% Pnt% Def Rtg PG Eff% SG Eff% SF Eff% PF Eff% C Eff%
    John Salmons 08-09 Bulls SF $1,845,703 34 39 27 45 88 100 100 92 80
    Len Chappell 70-71 Cavaliers PF $810,050 18 43 39 26 70 80 97 100 100
    Nate Hawthorne 74-75 Suns SG $906,547 11 49 40 77 95 100 100 86 74

Salmons has a defense of 45 and a "rookie" rating of 6. Hawthorne has a defensive rating of 77...*long pause*....and a "rookie" rating of 4. Huh? So these players correlate down to the minutes played but defense is what, a shot in the dark? Chappell is a 26 / 1, though.

In contrast...here is a sample from another team: Total "value" : 4,480,167. Total minutes: 3172.

    Name Team Pos Salary Per% Mid% Pnt% Def Rtg PG Eff% SG Eff% SF Eff% PF Eff% C Eff%
    Jimmy Foster 74-75 Spirits of St. Louis PG $728,605 3 74 23 36 100 100 89 70 60
    Marc Iavaroni 84-85 Spurs PF $1,834,922 1 47 52 44 71 89 100 100 97
    Peter Verhoeven 81-82 Trail Blazers PF $1,916,640 0 47 53 35 70 87 100 100 99

Defense seems to match up better in this case, though:

Foster: 36 / 4
Iavaroni: 44 / 4
Verhoeven: 35 / 3

How do you guys usually handle minute allocations for rookies?

The best way possible - avoid any League that uses them.
