Nolan Ryan: Thoroughly Average Good Pitcher Topic

Consider the numbers.

Never won a Cy, nor an MVP
Sure, he led the league in Ks 11 times - but he led the league in walks 8 times.
Sure, he is the all-time best at preventing hits (6.6 h/9) - but its what's on the scoreboard that matters, right?

And he was a good number 2 or 3 for a very long time. A 112 ERA+. Twice led the league in ERA - but he had 7 seasons where his ERA was worse than the league average.

He won a lot of ballgames - 324.

And he lost 292.

Never led the league in wins - but he led it in losses once.

His teams sucked a lot - so its hard to hang it all on him - but you wonder, if they'd had a better #1 - maybe they'd have won more games....

Flash but no substance.

If you pair 7 no hitters with 7 starts where you out up a 14 era,

Are u still boss?

Hypothetical...

Nolan Ryan WAS A BEAST

We'll never see anyone pitch like him ever again.  Straight nasty

I think Ryan is still pretty badly overrated, but still far from mediocre...

He was pretty good, probably among the top 30-40 pitchers of all time, which means he definitely belongs in the hall of fame.

That sounds about right.

The question was never about how good his stuff was, it's about how good a pitcher he was.  Baseball history is paved with guys with elite stuff but not enough command to make it work.  As an O's fan you, of all people, have to know this.  We had all kinds of "stuff" prospects for years that didn't pan out.  Cabrera could throw 98-102 for 120 pitches every 5th day and still be terrible.
