Kirby Puckett can be added to the list, had 6 excellent -to -great seasons in the 1980s... led the league in hits thrice, and a forth time finished 2nd with 223. Kirby had 4 gold gloves in his 6 1980s seasons.

I don't really like these "best player of the decade" questions because the time frame is too stringent.  It gets hard to name a guy like, for example, Gooden, who was great in the '80s, but didn't play for the full decade.  Or Puckett, who was good in the '80s, had a great career, but doesn't fit in the full decade and probably can't make most legitimate top 5 lists when measured against guys who played more games.  If I were to make a list, it would be:

1. Boggs
2. Schmidt
3. Rickey
4. Brett
5. Raines

One thing I don't understand is how so many guys have listed more than 5 players and not had Ripken on the list.  And nobody since Ligapelota's initial post has mentioned Gary Carter.  Maybe not enough credit is being given for defense by some people...

I don't think any pitchers from the '80s really make the conversation.  For me, Clemens and Gooden are the closest, but both right around the border of the top 10.  Certainly not top 5.

I'm pretty sure Eddie Murray comes before any of those guys.  Honestly, Raines is the only one in the same neighborhood.
