Gotta be honest, I've never played in a FGY7.  Can someone explain the basics to me?

Everybody buys a GC with entry and you try to lose as many as possible. Team with the most losses gets 7 GCs as a prize and tr remaining GCs are distributed to the next few primary losing teams. There are usually 4-6 teams that enter that try to go 162-0 which adds to the fun.

How are the playoffs determined?  By worst records?

Exactly.

And in some rubbings losing each round advances you, but in most you had to actually win in the playoffs. Creates a unique challenge.
