I don't understand this at all, and I guess it isn't all that big of a deal, but I feel like I clearly should have won CCOY this season and I didn't.

The guy that won CCOY was a first year coach at his school and finished 12-4 in his division, tied for the Eastern Division title.

My team finished 15-1 in conference, won the West title outright by multiple games, I beat the CCOY winner at his place by 24 (I hope I'm not jinxing anything since I play him in the CT final today lol) and my only loss was a 1 pointer @ the West 2nd place team...the margin on average was 20+ in my favor.

I feel like I should have run away with this thing...thoughts?

Our CCOY in my Crum league last year was a 2nd year coach that went 10-6 in conference play, whereas I went 16-0 in conference play. But I'm pretty sure improvement (or perhaps preseason expectation) is built into the logic. I went 16-0 the year before too, whereas our CCOY went 2-14 the year before.

Improvement is definitely a factor, as it should be IMO. I think most of the time it does a serviceable job picking the right coach.

Except when a SIM you beat twice gets it.

Thats basically exactly how it works in real life. The coaches that turn their teams around or show big improvements from the year before are generally going to win COY awards. If the award was given to the best coach every year it would get pretty boring.

As stated, improvement is the biggest factor in who wins the award. He improved his team's conference record from 2-14 to 12-4.

I agree it makes sense. Think of it this way, if you are mike krzyzewski at Duke, and you go 15-1 this season and your team is normally in the 13+ win range, then you just did what everyone expected you to do. Nothing new to see here. You've proven you're a good coach already and odds are you're playing with elite talent, but if you are Jim Larranaga at Miami, coaching a team that has not had 10 conference wins since 2001 and then goes 15-3, odds are you don't have elite talent and you have not only had significant improvement, but your record is pretty close to Duke's record. That should stand out. If Larranaga continues this run, then in the future, under the same circumstances, mike krzyzewski will win it.

I'm of the opinion that any time a coach goes 16-0 in conference play, he should automatically win the award.  Stacked with elite talent or not, you still can't do better than perfect.

I like this.  Still keep improvement as a major factor, but make it so 16-0 is automatic COY.

I wouldn't say automatic, but I do think it should be weighted pretty heavily. If a guy were to take over an 0-16 Sim and turn them into 15-1 the first year, with the only loss to the 16-0 team, I'd say that deserved COY. 

Obviously, that's a very unlikely scenario, I just don't like making this automatic. But a 16-0 record should take a pretty big turnaround (definitely 8+ games, maybe even 10+) to beat it. 

This system is much better than the one it replaced. In that system, they looked at the semi-finalists in the CT. The best RPI from that group won COY.  They did something similar for national COY but I can't remember if they used the Sweet 16 or Elite Eight. 

A few seasons ago one of my D3 teams went 16-0 but a SIM won the other side at 12-4. I beat the Sim by 28 & 25. The Sim got CCOY. I sent a ticket and was told he had the bigger improvement from the previous season whereas I won the conference every year. DUH!
