So, I'm a little confuzzled.  You can choose players from the 2-year span and you can NOT twist them and can not have clones, right?

Right.  If you choose the 1902-1903 Pirates, with the exception of any Free Agents you're entitled to, all of your players must come from either the 1902 or 1903 Pirates.  Pluswise, no Clones.
