Players can ask for all they want.   But, unless something is happening that I'm unaware of, yearly contract averages don't jump like that.  Before this one, what was the highest?  25-27m?   Cano was supposedly asking for 30m.   No takers.

no one on the radio today expressed this thought but what if the tigers really are saying were going to pay this 40+mil for 7 years and just spread it out for ten this keeps guys like trout from asking for 35mil a year  and keeps their team payroll down below the cap any thoughts on that
If true I'd rather the $40M over the next 7 years.  This way when you look at your player payroll 8, 9, 10 years from now you don't have $30M of potential wasted space on your team.

And it still doesn't explain why they did this now and not a year and a half from now.

The AAV jump has been slower from 25-30 than it was from 10-15, 15-20, and 20-25.

The first $10m per year deal was in 1996. 1998 for the first $15m per year, 2000 for $25 million per year. And now, 14 years later, $30 million per year for Kershaw and Cabrera.

I think Detroit just did what they had to do to keep the best player in the game for the next ten years. Cabby is 30, and will be 40 when this contract is up. Does anyone really think his production with the BAT will drop that much in the next 10 years. Sure, it will drop, but I'd be willing to bet that at 38, as a DH, he'll still be HAMMERING the ball.

REGARDLESS of whether a bad hop grounder hit him in the chest, face, or NUTS for all that it matters. Bottom line is that CABRERA=>JETER no matter HOW u slice it. AND if MikeT fielded the SAME grounder it would have broken his ******* "brown from licking Jeter's ***" nose.

Yeah, you're dumber than normal.   You have a very good example, staring you in the face right now, of how aging power hitters decline.    Who was considered the best hitter in the game 5 years ago?   And how's he doing now?

take out the steroid era and there has been very few players still hammering the ball at 38, sure you can come back with many players who were productive  late in there career but out of 18,000 some odd MLB players of all time it would still be very few.  I think cabrera will be more like rodriguez than williams

What about Papi?
Steroids does a 38 yr old body good.
