I'd go with Niekro for the HOF pitcher.    Pitched forever, threw a lot of complete games and gave up a lot a of homers.

Wrong.  Only threw 14 innings in October and gave up no homers.    How in the hell does he not get in the playoffs more often?

He played on a lot of bad to mediocre teams. Guess he wasn't valuable.

Can you guys keep your stupid feuds out of a fun trivia thread?

Niekro's few playoff innings reminded me of this trivia gem (so we'll have 3 active questions!):

What pitcher pitched the most innings while never pitching in a postseason game? (post-1900 as far as I know). It's a ridiculous number of innings.

3 top 20s in MVP.   A little valuable.

Just a little.

He deserved the CYA in 1978, and he finished 6th. He didn't even get one first place vote.

OK, post '60, pitcher in the HOF, pitched a complete game, not a reliever. That's a small list I think. I definitely don't know the answer but I can start guessing at parts of it...

Nolan Ryan?

It was not Ryan.  Ryan was an All-Star the year this happened, so you're in the right era.

I'll narrow it down some more: 1970s.

I like the Jenkins guess.  Unless he was on that 84 Cubs team? I know he finished his career there.

Ferguson Jenkins is correct, with 4500 IPs and no playoff appearances. Crazy.

When was the first time a future hall-of-famer hit a walk-off homer in a playoff game off a future hall-of-famer? I believe it's also the only time.
Bench off Seaver?

Jim Palmer played a lot of playoff games. Could it be him?
