CollegiateInsider.com's Post-season Awards

Bucky Simms

(Cincinnati, OH) - As another season of college basketball draws to a close, it's time to honor those players that have really stood out from the crowd this season...

Our first award goes to David Shugart as our Division I National Player of the Year. The Junior Power Forward averaged 18.1 ppg this season to go along with 7.4 rebounds per game. Shugart led San Francisco to 26 wins this season through his on and off court leadership - which should be a big plus next season (if he returns).

Our next award goes to Joe Nelson as our Division I Defensive Player of the Year. The 6'4", 214 lbs. Senior had nearly 1.4 blocks per game (not to mention the altered shots) to go along with 4.7 defensive boards per game for the University of Minnesota.

Our selection for Freshman of the Year goes to Federico Yazzie out of the Iowa State University. It was apparent early on that Yazzie was going to be special. The Shooting Guard averaged nearly 12 points per game against very tough competition. Should be fun to watch over the next 4 years although it's tough to imagine the NBA won't come knocking.

This seasons Collegiate Sports Writers Association selection for National Coach of the Year goes to stewdog who led Georgia Tech to a record of 30-1. This is the 2nd National COY Award for stewdog.

At the Division II level, we made the following selections:
National Player of the Year: Paul Petrin (23.8 ppg , 1.7 spg) Senior PG - Northeastern State University
Defensive Player of the Year: Brian Olsen (15.7 ppg , 9.8 rpg, 1.9 bpg) Senior C - Adams State College
Freshman of the Year: Luis Allred (8.8 ppg , 1.1 spg) PG - Mercyhurst College
National Coach of the Year: cregen7 (29-2) - Northeastern St.

Finally, the Division III awards go out to:
National Player of the Year: Kevin Sanders (20.9 ppg , 2.2 spg) Senior SG - Bard College
Defensive Player of the Year: Geraldo Martinez (17.9 ppg , 1.7 spg) Senior SG - Dickinson College
Freshman of the Year: Micheal Turner (10.7 ppg , 1.2 spg) PG - Elmira College
National Coach of the Year: bretodonnell (28-3) - Marywood

And what would the end of another college basketball season be without the normal arguments over who should be an All-American? If there was only some way to hypothetically match these teams and players up to see who would win and how they would do, that would answer all these 'what if?' debates. But, since there's nothing like that, here are the CollegiateInsider.com selections:
