How do you know Marrtinez didn't swing the bat with runners on base? He hit over .300 and slugged over .500, it seems like he had no problem delivering with the bat.

It's been my observation that players who tend to draw a lot of walks do so by working the count, by sometimes taking hittable pitches in the strike zone for called strikes.

If the game is on the line, with runners on base, I don't want my "HOF caliber" hitter taking strikes while trying to draw a walk.

Players that draw a lot of walks like Barry Bonds and Mickey Mantle?

Mantle's teammates drove him in 31.4% of the time, Bonds' 30.3%.

Martinez only 27.5%.

More benefit to the team if he took the bat off his shoulder a bit more often.

We're talking about Edgar Martinez.  Please try to stay focused on the discussion at hand.

Are you really stat monkeying this stuff?

So Mantle was better at controlling the outcomes of the at bats that took place while he was standing on first. Awesome.

I know this is confusing so I'll use as many small words as possible.

No, he had teammates capable of moving runners thus making it less important that he swing the bat.   EM did not have that same luxury.

Seriously, this is the dumbest argument I've ever heard on these boards and that's saying a lot. I don't even think they really believe it, they are just yanking chains.

My contention has been that EM took walks when swinging the bat would have been of more benefit to the team.   Because the hitters behind him were not very good.  It's pretty simple.

+1

SWING THE ******* BAT, EDGAR!!!

729 of his 1200ish walks came with men on base.    I think it's safe to say that he passed the baton to a lesser hitter 729 times.

Only 325 of his 1273 walks came on 3-0 counts.  So, yeah, he was seeing strikes.

Hall of Selfish Pricks.    Because he knew, around 600 times in his career, that taking a walk hurt the team but helped his stats.    What a dick.

Mike's absolutely trolling. This is bistiza level stuff. Even someone who thought that the government could eliminate the deficit by selling more bonds couldn't possibly be dumb enough to think that a high OBP is a bad thing.

Or the pitchers pitched around him. I fail to see how a ground out is a better outcome.

Do HOF-caliber players always ground out when they put the ball in play?   That doesn't seem very HOF-y to me.
