I don't know. How many times did Mantle do that? How many times did Frank Thomas do that? Manny Ramirez?

All great hitters walk at a decent rate. I'm assuming that all great hitters walked at times when a hit would have been preferable. That does not mean that the walk was bad.

And quit mentioning Dan Wilson, he very very rarely hit behind Edgar if ever.

This is ******* hilarious.  It's one thing to call people statnerds and such, its another thing to not use common sense.

One more thing I'll add - in general, if you're a .320 hitter, and you walk with a .250 hitter coming up, you're in a better position than you were before.  I'll give up the 7% chance of getting a hit for an extra guy on base.

And again, we're talking about a hypothetical situation and assuming Edgar isn't aggressive enough.  The reason I keep bringing up Mantle is because this argument can be used for pretty much every elite cleanup hitter who has a good eye.

See what happens when Edgar swings the ******* bat?

Please tell me how his walking in that situation would have put the Mariners in a batter position than actually winning the game with a double.

No one is arguing that a walk is ever better than a double.

If Martinez was walked intentionally in that situation, are you thinking "good move?"

That doesnt mean "walk > double"

Let me piggyback on this.  Martinez batted .356 that year.  The guy on deck did not start, pinch ran earlier and batted .232 in 142 atbats in the regular season.  Why wasn't Edgar intentionally walked?

As an aside, Vince Coleman led off for Seattle.  I have no recollection of him every being a Mariner. Strange.

You don't think I'm amused by two idiots arguing that Martinez doesn't belong in the hall of fame, not because he added very little value on defense and not because he didn't have huge power numbers, but because his high OBP included a 14% walk rate?

It's hilarious.
Seems you still don't understand my argument for no EM in the HOF.  I thought I spelled it out very clearly about 10 pages ago.   The fact that he walked 729 times with runners on so a Russ Davis could hit doesn't help his case.

Have I not answered this MANY times?

Who do you want swingng with RISP?   A .320 hitter or a .240 hitter?   A simple yes or no is all that's necessary.
Swinging at what? Any strike? What's the score...who is pitching....what is their fatigue level....how many men are on base...what inning is it, etc. Clearly baseball has too many variables to give a simple answer....but I know that is what simple minds want.
The first strike he sees.

Since we don't get biorhythms for players before each AB, the simple answer is "the better hitter".   And the better hitter is the .320 hitter.    See how simple that was?
