I wouldn't be shocked if Hoffman had to wait another year, even though he should be in easily.

Hey MikeT23, did these players walk too much for your taste?
Rank Player (yrs, age) Bases on Balls Bats
1. Barry Bonds (22) 2558 L
2. Rickey Henderson+ (25) 2190 R
3. Babe Ruth+ (22) 2062 L
4. Ted Williams+ (19) 2021 L
5. Joe Morgan+ (22) 1865 L
6. Carl Yastrzemski+ (23) 1845 L
7. Jim Thome (22) 1747 L
8. Mickey Mantle+ (18) 1733 B
9. Mel Ott+ (22) 1708 L
10. Frank Thomas+ (19) 1667 R
Which one of those guys are you comparing Martinez to? Because, if it's anyone other than Thome, you're a clown.
11/15/2017 2:32 PM
And, truth is, I probably don't give Thome proper credit as a hitter.

You seem to think good hitters shouldn't walk (much) and it's a worthless stat for a 3-4-5 hitter. Kind of like how Jeff Sessions says "Good people don't smoke Marijuana!"

That line of thinking is how the O's ended up with Mark Trumbo. What a joy it's been watching him strikeout or pop up pitches in the heart of the order in key situations. Don't want him taking a disastrous walk and giving the team another baserunner.

There's the unintentional intentional walk. A lot of the guys on that list saw pitches that were not borderline. Do you think Martinez commanded the same respect as Bonds, Ruth, Mantle, etc? Because, if you do, I'm not sure you understand baseball.

the only thing Trumbo has going for him as a hitter is power. He's not a good hitter. The same does not apply to Martinez. He was a very good hitter

Not comparing Edgar to these players but was trying to help you understand that walks are good for hitters regardless of where they hit in the lineup. Look, Edgar is a borderline candidate at best, but it's not going to diminish Cooperstown if he's elected.

Yes, I understand baseball completely!!

OK, BLjr. Not making outs is a good thing. I think everyone knows this. But, like all Germans aren't Nazis, all walks aren't the same.

If you have Ozzie Smith and Edgar Martinez coming up in the exact same situation, who do you want to swing and who do you want to walk? Neither will be TRYING to make an out while swinging(I feel like that has to be stated since you are behaving like BLjr). 3-2 count, borderline pitch.

Now you can BL up and avoid answering with some convoluted response or, since you understand baseball completely, you can pick Smith or Martinez to swing.

If it’s borderline, and EM can’t drive it, why swing? He’s paid to NOT make outs.

I wasn't comparing Trumbo to Edgar. I was saying the philosophy that heart of the order guys need to swing the bat and not draw walks is how we end up with hitters like Trumbo in the meat of the order. I'll take a 10-20 homer, 100-walk guy over Trumbo any day of the week.

Seems to me a "fantastic" hitter doesn't need one right down the middle to drive it. Are you saying EM has to have them down the middle? And, FWIW, borderline means the ump might just punch him out. Which is an OUT.

Well it WASN’T an OUT cuz you’d be saying he struck out too much looking. Not that he walked too much.
11/16/2017 1:49 PM
And imma just leave this right here

He’s one of just 21 players with a
career average over .300
career OBP over .400
and a career SLG% over .500

So if you wanna go ahead and say he took too many borderline pitches with RISP that he shoulda swung at, I’d be glad to see some stats. So go ahead, research monkey.

I already did my part.
11/16/2017 1:54 PM
Sorry, BL3, I don't have to prove ****. I say he doesn't deserve to be in and, year after year, he is not in. Appears to me that I'm right.
