rc27, OPS by position Topic

Could we compile a list of RC27 and ideal OPS by position? Interested in what people aim for each position (assuming at least passable defense to back it up)

Thanks in advance

You're asking a question that shouldn't have an answer.    You should aim for the most/highest possible while staying within the constraints of your budget.

OK well maybe people could give ranges then for each position.

For instance, people would be ok with their SS OPS-ing .500 if he was a defensive wizard. But you'd never let your 1B OPS that unless you were tanking for instance.

Maybe a better way of phrasing it is what's acceptable Rc27/OPS for each position?

Also for arguments sake it can't be considered an unanswerable question because for example whenever someone new here asks for defensive recommendations people suggest looking at hbd "averages" as a good starting point. Yes ideally we would have 100-100-100-100-100 across the board for all defensive positions but that's obviously not feasible. We can however use those recommendations as a guideline though. I'm just asking for the flip side then- offense numbers/ratings for each position

What Mike said.

There's a combination of
  • the salary paid to the player
  • the park played (a .750 OPS in Oklahoma City means something different than .750 OPS in Hartford)
  • the defence (or defense if you aren't Canadian) played at the position, especially if the position is SS, C or CF

I'm aware that it matters by position that's why I specifically said what to aim for "by position".

Let's walk backwards then. If we assume that 80-76-55-60 is good starting point for a 2b then what are good offensive ratings that go with that? Or are you trying to argue that we can only set guidelines for the defensive side but not the offensive side.

I was trying to politely say that any answer you get for this is likely bullshit.

I'll say .700 OPS for a defensive SS.   Then you can look at my 4 teams and see .550 to .650 because that's who I could get.   I'll look to replace all 4, at any time, but the numbers are what they are.     And, of course, if my SS had an OPS of .800 and I could make a deal for a SS that would OPS .900, I'd be all over it.  And that deal might mean my desired .850 1B will be moved and replaced with a .770 1B,         I gained .020 in team OPS by upgrading my SS and playing an "unacceptable" 1B.

There are just too many moving parts to break down exact numbers for what one seeks/desires for each position.

Rather than a position by position breakdown, I'll just say, (depending on park obviously) I like to see .800+ OPS from everyone UNLESS the guy is great defensively, in which case I can settle for a bit less.

I tried a mediocre SS/great defensive 3B at SS because I thought his bat would make up for his glove. I wasn't happy with the results.
A lot of it comes from the fact that the mediocre SS with a great bat hit like SH!T for me most of the time I had him, but I ended up going back to a stellar SS with a light bat and have been a better team since IMO. That stellar SS OPS'd like .650, which I think is plenty if he is GG calibre.

Lastly, you cannot overlook the importance of the caveats mentioned by DIAH. If I can pay league minimum for a .775 OPS I'm not paying 5M+ for an .800...

Here's CF in Mantle ranked RC27.

Your Gold Glovers are 10th and 11th. What is that worth?

There is no box you can fit that in.

I took a look at my two teams that are deep into the season just for the hell of it.   I'm a little surprised how close the clear starters are in RC27.

C - 5.88 and 5.67/4.24(two players splitting time with the 5.67 getting DH time also)
1B - 4.87 and 6.24
2B - 5.02/4.50 and 6.24
3B - 4.90 and 4.41
SS - 2.31 and 3.07
LF - 6.28 and 6.66
CF - 3.01 and 3.10
RF - 3.50 and 4.42

Both teams are in first but the 2nd listed has a better record in a weaker world.  With the exception of RF, both are sound defensively.  So maybe that's your ranges for good teams.   Although, as previously mentioned, I'd love to have higher numbers at every position.   Those aren't my goals, those are the results of me building a sound defensive team within my budget.   Both play in hitter's parks.

Here are my rc27 values (just after the all star break)

C - 7.67
1B - 13.08
2B - 3.28
SS - 1.58
3B - 6.57
LF - 4.50
CF - 3.23
RF - 11.28
DH - 7.17

Team is 1 game back in Division (2nd best record in AL).   Defense is a very good one (60 + plays to 7 minus ones) with a AL leading .989 fielding %. (Home park is 0,0,0,1,1 - Salem).

"ideal OPS by position" would probably be, u know, 1.000.... if your question is what is the league average OPS by position then you can easily calculate that yourself.  Certain positions have higher average OPS's and that's normal, so your goal should simply be to have higher-than-average OPS at every position and you'd have a good offense. If you can have above-average defense along with above-average OPS then you are in very good shape.

Is there a faster way to calculate league averages other than copy & paste all players into excel, then figuring out who plays which position and having excel do that math? Or is there somewhere on the stats page where you can find league averages & sort by position?

I don't care what my OPS is by position. I care what it is by their position in the batting order. If I have a LF a SS and a 2B who are hitting 30-40 HR's and my 1B is an OB machine what the hell do I care. I'm hitting them in the top 4-5 spots in the order no matter what position they play.

Ok, I'll be that guy. What is rc27?
