This is an interessting statement.."In the SimEngine, Assist% is a component that can impact (positively or negatively) the shooting percentage of the player's team on offense. It also helps determine if a made field goal resulted from an assist and if so, which player is credited with the assist". This seems to say ast% has two functions 1) as a modifier of fg% and 2) to determine if an ast is credited and to whom.
the second function is purely cosmetic impacting the box score but not the outcome - an assist is determined to have happened and then it is assigned after the fact - many of the stat categories have this secondary function

I see, but thats what we calculate from our ast%..apg. Then the primary function is to modify fg%, and we really have no way to quanitate the positive (bump) or negative effect of the ast%. I work from a base idea that about 30-32 well distributed apg result in a solid positive effect wrt fg%.
3/21/2014 6:04 AM
I view def as how you modify an opponents fg%, and ast as how you modify you own fg%. In short you battle strong def with strong ast%..and visa versa. the shooter is caught in the middle somewhere. If you have weak ast you have no way to fend off a strong def and your fg% will suffer.

Check out McGuire...+10%!!! Miken, Barry, & Wise +5%. Berry's 3pt% was up +11% (47.7%)..yup #1 3pt shooter in the league.  lmao

3/21/2014 7:01 AM (edited)
The point is not that I can do this in an open draft but that the effect is real. As van points out, I don't need +5% a mere +1-1.5% should do it. Obviously the def in era stunk the place up and ast ruled.
3/21/2014 7:19 AM (edited)
eh - that's more of an era thing, though. Plenty of other teams in that league shooting well over RL% too.  You can't translate results from old school leagues to this league. I do agree that ast% is important - I usually like to have 60-70% in my lineup - I just don't know if it works the way you think it does.
3/21/2014 7:53 AM
On an unrelated note, I don't think I like my team very much. Just doesn't feel right.

impact on fg% is the only important thing, the rest is window dressing - the engine determines whether a shot has been made before determining whether it was assisted and only after that deciding who dropped the dime

Waiting to see just how much my short list gets shredded by the three picks ahead of me...  I like what I've got so far, but the train could come off the tracks in any given round.
3/21/2014 8:27 AM
This is quite interesting. IMO logain's pick at #88 sort of determines what happens this season. I didn't realize that his next pick isn't until #128 in the 5th.

Yes,, I am struggling!
