We have a trade deficit because it's cheaper to build in Japan, ship to Norfolk and distribute from there. There are two ways to solve that:
1. Pay Americans a lot less than they want
2. Make it less lucrative, via import tax, to import goods

It's not isolationism but it's a step in that direction.

um, increases in domestic production will be handled in ever-increasing proportions by our future robot overlords. Hopefully Trump can force the robot manufacturers to stay in the US.

The Japs will figure out a way to pay their robots less.

China just 'hired' customs robots with facial recognition to work their ports.

I simplified it, a lot, but every port employs thousands. I won't even mention the reason we import so much is because it's just cheaper to build in Japan, ship to Norfolk and distribute from there. The sheer cost of building in the US we create inflation that you won't imagine(or maybe just admit).

I'm sure you know why Mexicans jumping the fence can easily find employment.

As soon as Trump's America is self-contained, people will HAVE to make $15 an hour at McDonalds just so they can afford to not be homeless.

That said, I don't think Congress is stupid enough to allow isolationism. It didn't work before, it won't work again.
Trumps not looking for isolationism. He wants better trade deals. He wants to INCENTIVE companies (foreign and domestic) to produce goods in the USA. Thus repatriation of funds, much lower corporate taxes, and large scale deregulation. Only a drama queen or a liberal would think that's isolationism.
He wants to make it less lucrative to import goods. I'm not sure you're saying anything different.
We have an ever growing trade deficit. Trump wants to reverse this trend. I hope he can. If successful, we'll have many more higher paying manufacturing and tech jobs, versus the minimum wage and part time service jobs Obama has created.
Hell, I think we all hope he can. I wouldn't count on it though.

General Motors said today it will invest an additional $1 billion at several plants in the U.S., a move that comes just a week after President-elect Donald Trump's latest tweet critical of the automaker's Mexican car production.

The automaker also said it plans to bring thousands of information technology jobs back to the U.S. from overseas, creating a total of 7,000 new jobs in the U.S. when the IT jobs and new manufacturing jobs are combined.

Remember when Obama gave GM 'bailout' money (tax payer dollars) and GM invested $1 billion in Brazil?

Remember cash for clunkers? You know where Obama spent $3 billion to stimulate the 'US' auto industry.... And the Top 3 Cars sold under this program were the 'Toyota' Corolla, 'Honda' Civic, and 'Toyota' Camry?

I'm not mad. But I don't make cars. I move imported freight from the coasts to middle America.
