How much of a disadvantage is zone defense? Topic

I'm also wondering how the 3-2 is grouped. Would it just be a 1-2-2 where the PG is alone and 2/3 and 4/5 are together?
3-2 = PG/SG/SF + PF/C

No. It's PG/SG/SF and PF/C.
Hmmm. Weird why they wouldn't group it like that with the 2-3. PG/SG and SF/PF/C

Ok. thanks for the answer. Know someone had mentioned it somewhere, but it was a long time ago.

Yeah but what is the center averaged against? The other center? Driving guards?
i think its much more about the type of shot, than who is shooting it. i have no idea what the answer is, was discussing this last night with the guy i coach that zone team with...
I wonder if the guards cover 3 point shots, the forwards cover mid range jumpers and the center cover lp based shots?

When I say cover, I mean their value is weighed more.

all 5 players are averaged together in defense of every shot. its just that the groups of players run off the same formula. so in the 2-3, the pg/sg have one formula, the sf/pf have another, and the c has a third. but then all 5 are averaged in to defend each shot. the formulas for each group change with the distance from the basket though so its not like a c's sb is super important in defending a 3, like it is defending a layup.
I've read this a hundred times over the last three years and don't have any idea what it means...
Here’s how I look at it.

The players in the groupings (pg-sg-sf / pf/c in 3-2, pg-sg / sf/pf in 2-3) use the same ratings to determine their defensive effectiveness. The relevant attributes per grouping are average between the players, and that is the defensive effectiveness of that zone. So if a shot is taken from that zone, the appropriate effectiveness is weighted against the offensive player’s formula.

For C in a 2-3, I’m still not sure if he has his own “zone”, or if his effectiveness is mostly as inside help for low post and maybe some mid-range shots.

Would there be anyway to tell from the play by play where the shot is coming from, since the rumor is that the pbp is cosmetic?

I think so.

Layups, tipins, from the block...those are all LP/ATH shots

jumpers, fadeaways, from the wing.....mid range jumpers (SPD/PER)

Maybe...

Want you want to check for is if any 1 PER players take the second kind.

I just did, more than 20% of the shots for three guys with PER scores of 1,1, and 7 over a variety of defenses and levels were of the mid ranger jumper variety. Doesn't make much sense to me.

That doesn’t surprise me. I think of perimeter as outside the mid-range area. It would be interesting for someone less lazy than myself to track shots, and what kind of shots different types of players take over the course of a season. I don’t believe the PBP is cosmetic at all in that regard. I think it definitely matters where shots are being taken.
