So Jeter collected 1200 more hits in 5 seasons?   OK.

It appears you're arguing that he didn't have 1200 more hits in 5 seasons.  240 hits a year.  Unless I picked up on sarcasm that wasn't here.  Otherwise I don't understand the point of this post.

I am not arguing that he had 1200 more hits than DiMaggio.
Well, Jeter played 18 seasons per you.   DiMaggio played 13 per everybody.

Jeter played 5 more seasons and accrued 1200 more hits as a Yankee.

Are you saying that has no value?
No, I'm not.

Well, I'm kinda hanging my "After the top 3, you could argue any number of players to fill out the top ten" hat on offensive WAR and 1200 hits in 5 more seasons for DJ over JD.

Yea, I'll hang my hat on "Jeter's best year (easily) was basically DiMaggio's average year."  Hits is a good stat, but it's not the most important thing in the world.  In 5 less seasons, DiMaggio had more extra base hits than Jeter.  Better OBP, and SLG .155 higher.  I'll take 13 years of DiMaggio over 18 years of Jeter.

That's why I asked the value of another half career.    Do you want Joe D for 13 and whoever for the next 7 or Jeter for 20?
"Whoever for the next 7" was Mantle, so there's that...
"Well, yeah, that happens all the time" he says with sarcasm.    So there's that.

That's fine.   I don't feel your argument is any more convincing than mine.

Which was my point.

Would you take 22 seasons of Pete Rose over 16 seasons of Mike Schmidt? It's kinda the same thing, but the same era, basically.  Rose and Jeter compiled hits, but Schmidt was clearly a better player when he played.

IOW, I wouldn't throw a fit if someone said "Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio, Berra, Ford, Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte" or reversed the order of 4-9.   Or it you tossed another name or two in there.

I personally think Pettitte is heavily underrated because he was never the "ace" of the staff.

I'd be happy with either.

Maybe not, but anyone with any meaningful analytical skills DOES feel that his argument is more convincing than yours.  By leaps and bounds.

I'm pretty sure that's your over-inflated sense of self-worth talking.   Pardon me if I don't take your "meaningful analytical skills" seriously, fuckstick.

Maybe you should tell us how Gomez is #6 on the Yankee list again.

Or how HOF voters must ABIDE by precedents that have been set.

No, he's right. burns's argument is much better than yours.

Also, who gives a **** about raw hit totals?
Um

What?
8/8/2014 5:55 PM
Um Pete Rose has the most hits but isn't the best hitter. Raw hit total isn't a great evaluation tool.

You only care about raw hit totals when it comes to Jeter, but not to Beltre?
8/8/2014 7:40 PM
In any case...take one hit away from Jeter for the ridiculous hit he was given today on a ball the first baseman dropped.
