I apologize for not writing this weekend. I had to go up to my alma-mater and train the new mascot team. I'll be back today.

Week 9 Review:

Villanova, PA:  The annual rivalry in the A10 pits two top 20 teams together. UMass came into this game undefeated, and making a strong push for a 1 seed. Villanova came in with a 7-1 record, the loss was a five point loss to Yale. Nearing the end of the first half, the score was 13-7 Umass, until Clifford Savage found a hole and ran 13 yards to the endzone. At halftime, the Minutemen held a 20-10 lead over the Wildcats. Early on in the 2nd half, Villanova's defense was able to hold UMass twice but the Wildcats offense couldn't stir up any momentum. The score remained 20-10 with just 4 minutes to go in the third, and then Angel Watkins found William Bell in the end zone for the touchdown, giving UMass a 27-10 lead. And the Wildcats weren't able to get back in this one as UMass rolls 47-16.

New York, NY:  Early in the season, there were lots of expectations for Yale. However, those expectations fell significantly after an unlikely loss to Elon. Ever since that game, Yale has been playing a different level of football. The reigning IVY champs, Columbia, were looking to rebound after getting crushed by Fordham two weeks ago. Columbia got off to a fast start. William Anderson threw a deep ball to a wide open William Clayton for 26 yards, and the very next play, the Lions scored. Despite Columbia holding a 14-3 lead with just 7 minutes to go in the half, Yale made a strong comeback. The most dominant rushing attack in FCS surprised everyone when James Floyd dropped back to throw a deep pass to Scott Morrow. That touchdown gave the Bulldogs a 17-14 halftime lead. After that, Yale never lost the lead. A couple of quick scores in the third gave them a 27-14 lead and then they held on for dear life. Yale gets a big win, 27-21.

Offensive Player of the Week:  Robert Oakes - Jacksonville State - 363 Rushing yards, 4 Rushing touchdowns

Defensive Player of the Week:  Franklin Christensen - Chattanooga - 9 tackles, 1 sack, 2 INT, 1 PD

Week 10 Game of the Week:

Colgate vs Fordham

The IVY League holds the reputation of being the toughest conference in the country.  Tradition, excellence, smashmouth; these are the traits of FCS football and they are held to no higher degree than in the IVY. Tomorrow, in Bronx, NY, the IVY League Western division title is on the line. This game provides a chance. It provides a chance to play in the IVY League championship. A chance to win the most prestigious conference in FCS. Collectively, these teams average 570 yards of offense per game. Expect to see a lot of touchdowns as two of the best quarterbacks in the country face-off.

Prediction: Colgate 37 Fordham 31

Week 10 Review -

New York, NY- Everyone looked at this game, expecting the offenses to put on a show, and that is exactly what happened. Just a mere 7 minutes into the game, Michael Cooley got the scoring started off of a 18 yard run. Fordham would be quick to answer, after Frank Martinez constructed a drive that lasted 12 plays, went 69 yards and hit Andrew Cooper for the touchdown. But Johnny Crawford was too much for the Rams and despite only completing 47% of his passes, he led Colgate to victory. The Raiders get the win, 41-27.

Big Losses

The following teams all lost this week, and those losses could become a major factor in whether or not they make playoffs.

  • Appalachian State loses to Georgia Southern
  • Coastal Carolina gets crushed by Austin Peay
  • Morgan State gets dropped in overtime by Hampton
  • Illinois State out scores Indiana State

Offensive Player of the Week: Walter Duran - Southern Illinois - 329 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns, 3 receptions, 68 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown.

Week 12 Review:

Newark, DE: A game that shouldn't have meant much for the JMU Dukes could cost them an appearance in the post-season. JMU came into this game with an 8-3 record and ranked 23rd. I was predicting them to get a six seed in playoffs, but a surprising loss to Delaware could jeopardize the Duke's post-season. The Blue Hens came into this game with a 1-10 record and ranked 70th. For now, JMU's playoff hopes seem to be okay as they only fell to 26th in the WIS rankings. Their next game is against Villanova. And although the Wildcats are a tough opponent, a loss for JMU could knock them back to around 30th in the WIS rankings. If that happens, JMU is all the sudden on the bubble and the Duke post-season could rest in the hands of the committee.

Hampton, VA: NC A&T is having one their best seasons in school history. Johnmut has recruited well, and coached this team to be a playoff contender. Coming into this game against Hampton, the Aggies were looking at a 5 seed according to my bracketology. A loss could have sent them back into 7 seed territory and put them in a must win situation tomorrow. The Aggies got off to a fast start, opening up a 17-0 lead after Kevin Lambert put together several nice drives. Early in the third quarter, George Holland hit a chip-shot, 35 yard field goal to cut the Aggie's lead to 14. And then in the 4th, the Pirates scored on two consecutive drives to tie the game at 24. 4 minutes later, NC A&T responded with two touchdowns that were a minute apart, regaining their 14 lead. The Aggies were able to hold on and win 38-31.

Offensive Player of the Week:  Harold Haynes - Yale - 504 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns.

Defensive Player of the Week: Brian Moss - UMass - 10 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception, 1 PD, 1 TFL

Conference Championship Week

This week will be a little different. There is a lot on the line in terms of playoff seedings. So, we'll be looking at the games as how they could impact playoffs.

IVY: Easily the deepest conference in FCS history, but there aren't many championships to show for it. This game will determine a 1 seed. A win for Colgate could push the Raiders to the number one overall seed. However, this game also has implications on teams that won't be playing tomorrow. Villanova and Dayton would see a SOS increase if Yale won. Seeing as how Nova is bordering on a 4 seed, a win by Yale could provide that push.

MEAC:  Despite boasting a 12-1 record, Florida A&M's weak schedule has them as a 4 seed in our bracketology. The Rattler's have dominated the MEAC in the past, winning the conference every season since 88. However, a strong NC A&T team could jeopardize the Rattler's stranglehold on the conference. Additionally, the Aggies are looking at a 5 seed but an upset could push them to a 4 or maybe even a 3 seed.

Gateway:  SIU dominated Northern Iowa earlier in the season, 44-10. But Northern Iowa has been to semi-finals for 2 out of the past 3 seasons. They've emerged as the best team in the conference over the past few seasons, so a loss here still seems somewhat unlikely. However, Southern Illinois is possibly having their best season in school history. Probably looking at a 2 seed, a win could move them the a one seed. Northern Iowa has the most to gain from this game. The Panthers are probably a 5 seed but a win would certainly make them a 4, at the worst.

Selection Show

Because you guys have been great by reading this and offering advice, I'm going to do my best to provide you with a selection show. If you want to see the show, I'll be posting the link on here around 4pm. That time may be closer to 4:30 since the playoffs aren't usually revealed until 3:05, but stick with me. Since this is my first time doing anything like this, there will obviously be some kinks and issues that need to be worked out. Please feel free to offer any advise for the show, or for the blog. Again, thanks everyone for a great season and good luck to all of you who make playoffs.

*It's 3:45 and the video is processing. I will post it on here immediately after it is uploaded to Youtube. If you want to avoid spoilers, try to avoid your office page until then. Should be just a few minutes.
