So much long-windedness.

Do not compare what happened 160 years ago to what happens today.   160 years ago we could actually own a human being.   We're a little more advanced, i.e. civilized, than we were in 1855.

Am I seriously the only person who knows this?
160 years ago we could own a human being. Today we allow people to murder babies and call it "choice." I would not call that much of an advance.
I think it's called a "fetus" and there are several definitions of when life begins.

160 years ago we could own "human beings" and there is one definition of "human being."

IOW, your take on abortion is not relevant to this discussion.

So enlighten me...define "human being"

Moy, just to be clear...I do not think you are racist, evil, etc. and salute you for your work with UW.

So, you believe those that sheltered Jews in the Netherlands, France, Denmark, and even Germany, were wrong to do so? There also was a Chinese diplomat, Dr. Feng Shen Ho, who issued 10,000+ exit visas in Austria to Jews to go to China. He did this despite orders not to. He saved far more than Schindler did. Was he wrong to do so?

Morally or legally wrong? Legally - if it was against the law then yes it was wrong. Morally, IMO, it was the right thing to do. The right way to go about it is to petition the govt to make a change in a free democracy instead of just going ahead and harboring illegal immigrants.

Ho didn't break any laws from what I just briefly read of him. He was insubordinate and in the end he forfeited his pension for it. Can he sleep with a good conscience? Probably. Should he have been penalized for insubordination? Yes. Am I glad he was insubordinate, yes. My family has Jewish lineage. The ends simply don't justify the means - I'm glad Ho did what he did but yes he should also be punished for being insubordinate. Had he been able to rally support from other key members and gotten his superior to rethink the position on issuing visas he'd had gone about it the 'right' way. I'm sure Ho knew the consequences when he made his decision and he was punished for his 'means' despite the 'end'

I'm not sure what you are trying to get out of me.... I simply believe in following the law. I didn't always believe that but now looking back I can see how stupid I was when I was younger. The laws are there for a reason ...when you allow exceptions to the law to be OK for any reason others will expect they get exceptions too and pretty soon no one is following the law anymore.

The lollie lawsuit for $500,000 should have a verdict in the next couple weeks so we have that going for us. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been settled out of court by this point.

BALTIMORE (AP) - One of the Baltimore police officers who arrested Freddie Gray has challenged police and a top prosecutor to produce a knife that prompted the arrest, arguing in a court motion that it is an illegal weapon.

Attorneys filed the motion in Baltimore District Court for Officer Edward Nero, who is charged with second-degree assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. The motion appeared to challenge the basis for charges Nero faces after the arrest of Gray, a black man who died a week after suffering a severe spinal injury in police custody.

Last Friday, Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby charged Nero and the others just a day after receiving the investigative report from the police department. Mosby said the officers had unlawfully arrested Gray because the knife he had in his pocket is considered legal under Maryland state law.

Marc Zayon, Nero's attorney, argued in the motion filed Monday that the knife in Gray's pocket - described in charging documents as "a spring assisted, one hand operated knife" - is in fact illegal under state law. Maryland, he said, defines a knife as unlawful if it opens automatically by pushing a button, spring or other device in the handle.

The charges against the officers came near the close of a turbulent week in which violence, looting and fires erupted in the streets April 27 only hours after Gray's funeral that Monday.

But some lawyers including Andy Alperstein, who has represented police officers but is not involved in the Gray case, said those charges can only be proven if Gray was wrongly arrested. If the knife was illegal, "there is no case" against Nero and another officer, he said.

"If the facts were that the knife was illegal then the Gray arrest would be justified. Even if it wasn't illegal and the officers acted in good faith, it would be the same result. All charges fail," Alperstein said.

Some spring-assisted knives are opened by pushing a thumb stud attached to the blade.

Many knives have these spring-assisted opening mechanisms but are not the automatic knives prohibited under Maryland law, said Michael Faith, marketing director for Henderson's Sporting Goods in Hagerstown.

"An automatic knife means all you do is push a button and the blade pops out," Faith said. "A lot of knives will have a little spring assist so when you push it open with your thumb, the knife will open up pretty much by itself."

Police said officers chased Gray two blocks after making eye contact with him and subsequently found the knife in his pocket.

The Associated Press has made repeated requests to the police department for a physical description of the knife as well as photographs. Police later referred the request to the state's attorney's office.

Nero and Officer Garrett Miller are charged with misdemeanors. Four others - Sgt. Alicia White, Lt. Brian Rice and officers Caesar Goodson and William Porter - are charged with felonies ranging from manslaughter to second-degree "depraved-heart" murder.

Calls to attorneys representing Miller and Rice, who were involved in Gray's arrest, were not immediately returned.

Mosby's office declined to comment on a pending case, citing prosecutorial ethics.

Media coverage of gang violence sure looks different when the perpetrators are white

The conversation around Waco isn't bad — it just highlights how absurd the analysis of crimes committed by black people can be.

THE BIKERS SHOT EACH OTHER AND NO ONE ELSE!!!

I'D WRITE SONGS ABOUT IT IF LOOTERS WOULD DO THAT!!!!!

5/19/2015 8:01 PM
It was pretty different indeed.

I didn't see any "leaders" defending or making excuses for the actions of the gang members.
I didn't see any reports of anyone claiming that more job training would have prevented this.
I didn't see any WACO politicians arguing that the police should stand down and give the thugs room.
I didn't see any reports of 100+ arrests and large bails being set in Baltimore or Ferguson.
I didn't see anyone praising any of the dead criminals or saying how tragic it was that the police shot and killed them.
