I know I'm beating the same horse again but why are you suprised, gillispie? DI HD is made specifically for 6 BCS conferences (72 teams) with an additional 2 mid-major conferences playable (MWC and A10.) Almost everything else is crap unless a group of humans decide to make a commitment.
With 72 The Chosen, 24 playable teams, the random coach playing at his alma mater regardless of location, the random coach who is toiling at crap hoping to get promoted to The Chosen and isolated groups of humans attempting to elevate crap conferences to relevance, 130-140 DI players seems about right for the business model.
There are 324 DI schools but the programming bends over backwards to bless less than a third. If they want more players, make the other schools attractive to stay at.
oh, i never said i was surprised. or maybe i did, but not in the way you are suggesting. i was surprised to see d1 tark had rebounded so significantly, but then i was less surprised to see tark was somewhat unique. tark has a little staying power in d1 because it was the only new world for such a long time, and so many coaches have IDs there, so i think its a little different. no surprise on the d1 falling off though, i've long been one of the leaders in criticizing the new engine d1 recruit generation model, and have never stopped calling for a fix. i know some people are afraid seble will break it worse, but when you change something and lose a full third (that really happened) of all coaches affected (of all d1 coaches) you have to make a change - even if its years later.
i was a little surprised by the d2 dropoff, however. there are plenty of d2/d3 enthusiasts, but really d1 is the place to be for the majority of coaches in this game, so i suppose i shouldn't be at all surprised. crap up people's favorite place, and if they leave that, why are they gonna stick around anywhere else?
