4 years 57 million

That's going to suck real fast.

IMO, that's a very bad contract.

They are going all in for year one...then suck for many many years.

If you're going to give Cano that contract, you have to commit to winning.   Maybe they get two good seasons from Cruz.

I would like this deal better if they signed him before last season for 4 years.  He is a terrific post season player so let's hope he gets to play in October!

I don't care what the cost is, it's not my cash. I'm glad they got him instead of the parade of has-beens that have been trotted out by the M's through the years.

The problem becomes when they don't spend cash later on because they're paying a so-so 36-37 year old OF $14M.

2014 version of Nelson Cruz is worth that money. But I'd bet money that he doesn't hit 30 homers any of these next 4 years.

Still don't care. The long-term future isn't bright for the M's, it's as bleak as always, however next season there's a chance to be good. They finished a game out of the wildcard slot and that's with zero offense. Felix isn't going to be Cy Young contender forever, and this may be Iwak's last season here. Cano is a top 2B, Seager is at/near his prime.

This is a franchise that has been to the playoffs 4 times in their 38 year history, and 0 times since 2001. You have to strike while the iron is hot.

Safeco Field was a better HR park in 2014 than Camden Yard. The deal would have been better last year, but as stinenavy said, it's not my cash being spent. But not as many games in Yankee Stadium or Rogers Centre or Fenway. But as a DH, almost anything ahs to be better than the black hole that was for the Ms last year.

[Prediction: Smoak will hit 25+ HR, playing in the AL East next year, but that doesn't mean the Ms should have kept him.]

edit...that was before the Blue Jays non-tendered him....can anyone explain that? Seems like a waste of the waver claim plus the $150K buyout.

He'll hit 30 next year. I've got a 14.95 gift card on it.

Of course Smoak will be good now that he's gone.  He'll probably be the Blue Jays AS representative!

If you're asking me to bet that, I'm in.

Smoak just signed with the Jays for $1 mill/1 yr. Intereting to see if Smoak and Saunders light it up. A diet of AL East ballparks ought to help.
