Defense and the Press Topic

Thinking about running the press for the first time. I would be at the mid major DI level.

How important is the def rating, compared to speed/ath/stamina? Is there a certain rating that you would target?

I definitely make great speed a necessity among guards on my press team. I tend to trade off rebounding for speed at the 3 too. As far as bigs, I'll pay attention to it at the 4 but not much at the 5; definitely more focused on cores at the 5.

As far stamina goes, it really depends on your rotation. If you have 5 bigs rotating at the 4 and 5, you can afford for them to have slightly lower stamina (average in the mid-to-low 70s) which is a compromise you'll often have to make because bigs to tend to have lower stamina than guards in HD. Finding bigs with great stamina can afford you great flexibility though, especially if the fifth player in the rotation can play the 3. Having one of my PFs split time between the 3 and the 4 last season gave us a rebounding boost that we needed and I think it made a huge difference in our season.

What about Ath?  I was always told in the press you need HIGH ATH. Is that not true, is speed more important the ATH?

I would try to get to 80 for speed, ath and defense as a NT quality team at D1.....They are all pretty important but I don't think a 70/70/100 guy is significantly better or worse than a 80/80/80 guy.......I would try to match a higher ath guy with a lp type scorer and a the higher spd guy with per scorers or pg types.....

Athleticism is important to any defense obviously, but I'd agree with Trent that you're gonna be shooting for a lower ath/spd ratio running the press than you would any other defense.

Side question on defense and IQ

Who's better?

IQ B  DEF 11
IQ F  DEF 39

I'd say almost indeterminably close. But the player with the F IQ will increase his IQ very quickly while the other will improve his IQ much more gradually so I'd probably lean towards the F IQ player.

For a guard in the press:

70 ath
70 spd
70 def

or

50 ath
90 spd
70 def

For purely defense? Probably the 90 speed guy but it really depends on who you are playing and what their attributes are.

The guards I signed project out to 85/95+/99 and 80+/95+/70+ ath/speed/def so even though their offensive skills aren't great, they should at least be effective in the press.

But then again they'd be effective in any defense at the mid major level.

That makes me think of another question. Take a guard with very good to great defensive ratings like I mentioned in my previous post, but mediocre offensive ratings, does the press make him a better scorer than if I used M2M? This would be someone with little to no distro on the offensive end.

I'm thinking steals leading to run outs, etc. Is there any reason to think this would be true?

Kinda. Good BH helps. A lot.

I'd go with the 90 guy too. 70 is way too slow for a PG at D1.

Yeah, I know BH helps a ton. Let me rephrase my question.

Would a guard with 85 ath, 95 speed, 99 defense and 55 BH score more playing the press than he would in man defense? Identical distro, IQ, etc.

yes
